the bubbly surface of the 250 liters indigo vat — it is so strong and healthy that you can get a dark blue jeans color with only 1-2 short dips.
the design covered with katazome glue (homemade using local ingredients in Vietnam). this glue will prevent the indigo ink pigments from getting onto the surface of the fabric, hence leaving it in the original white colour while the remaining area become blue.
stencils made out of handcut designs on plastic paper and a fine mesh (industrial bug repellent) sticked together using a water-based black paint. they are placed flat on the ground, on top some pieces of newspaper to dry.
my first workshop of 2026 with dudu.indigodye. i appreciated the care & dedication that’ve gone into their practice: from desk research and field trips, to the meticulous documentation & the hundreds of experiments they’ve done to localize the process & make their knowledge accessible to everyone.

When you’re used to clay from a bag, you forget how deeply local clay really is. Moving back home after years away, I have to learn how to work with a whole range of new clay bodies. It feels like having to relearn my mother tongue— frustrating, yet grounding and intimate.
The key is: less water.
