Your job today is to find five people, get them into a room, force them to listen to this while you stare intently from the corner. Set a stopwatch and in 90 second intervals say just loud enough to be audible “it’s good, right?” Try not to blink.

Back in 2018, when we were making No Feeling Is Final, we didn't dare dream that people would still be listening to/talking about the show SEVEN YEARS later. But I'm so glad they are. I'm so proud of this show, and what it means to people. And this article from @bencannon.bsky.social really gets it.

Fingers Crossed, Twice - Transom Fingers Crossed, Twice - Transom

Nothing seems guaranteed these days for creative audio makers. "Short Cuts" was recently cancelled and "Pretendians" is seeking funding for a second season, two shows on this episode of Sound School that are high on Rob's must-listen list because they elevate the craft:

White cut out letters on a black background read ‘Save Short Cuts!’

White cut out letters on a black background read ‘Save Short Cuts!’

A screenshot of the opening of the letter. It reads, “We are devastated by the news of the BBC’s cancellation of Short Cuts.
In a time where audio imaginations are being squashed by commercial realities, Short Cuts has been a stronghold for creativity. While the podcasting market exploded, and imploded, Short Cuts has been a life raft for audio-makers and artists from all over the world to hold onto. Rather than fostering one particular style of storytelling, Short Cuts continues to inspire a generation of makers around the world to try new things, be ambitious, and tell stories they can’t tell elsewhere. In this way, the influence of Short Cuts goes far beyond its series. It is more than just a podcast, it is a call to action, a cultural hub, an informal mentorship programme, an ode to audio that takes time. We agree with The Guardian’s Miranda Sawyer “that this is one of the most important programmes on UK radio”.”

We were in bits when we saw this open letter on Friday, put together by a group of audio-makers.

It’s Sunday morning as we write this and it already has well over 800 signatures. 😭 docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Grateful to see such immediate, widespread support for this singular radio/pod show from @fallingtreeprod.bsky.social that's just been cut by @bbcradio4.bsky.social. There's a letter urging the BBC to reconsider their cancellation of Short Cuts.

"It is an irreplaceable show, with a dedicated audience, an unmatched cultural impact and a team that nurtures talent and stories with a rare sensibility and care."

All good things must come to an end – but this seems wrong. A brilliant repository of strange, funny, beautiful, arcane stories, Short Cuts has always been truly inventive, a place for audio experimentation and new voices (a rarity on R4) and an absolute balm for listeners. I hope it finds a home.

This is absolutely heartbreaking news. I — like so, so many producers — would not have my start in audio without Short Cuts. It's a rare gem and the perfect home for documentaries, essays, experimentation and audio art. Shows like Short Cuts should be celebrated and protected.
