Hands above his head, Lysander gave in.

“I can never win against you…”

And yet Lysander could see dark smudges forming beneath honeyed eyes, bitter coffee on his breath. “Baby—”

“Just let me take care of you,” he all but whined, eyes pleading as he leaned in closer, knuckles brushing Lysander’s cheek.

Flipping over in the bed, he met Max’s eyes, suddenly far too aware of his husband’s thighs pressing in on either side of his hips.

“The sun's about to come up,” he said, as if that had ever stopped him before, “Don’t you want to sleep?”

Max smiled softly. “Not in the slightest.”

Lysander did know that.

But he also knew Max had been up all night, waiting for them to come home, waiting to see if Lysander had any more bullet holes in him like he had last time.

It had been so hard to calm him down that night. Not that his anxiety towards bullet wounds was unwarranted but…

“It’s a good distraction,” Max told him after a moment, pressing down hard into knotted muscles.

Lysander groaned, not realizing what he had said until Max finally eased up, pressing soft circles into the center of his back instead. “Maxi—”

“You know I’m right.”

Max laughed, his breath ghosting across Lysander’s back as he leaned forward, tickling the hair at the nape of his neck.

Hands grazed over his shoulders and Lysander tensed as he fought back the shiver it sent down his spine.

“I’m on top of you giving you a massage and you’re thinking about work?” Max demanded, voice half disbelief and half frustration.

“It’s on purpose,” Lysander answered, “Gotta think about something else so I don’t snap you in half.”

“What are you thinking about?”

“Work.”

“Not at all. But! I’ve got seven dogs and three cats now, so I’m pretty pleased.”

“Well,” he began, turning himself around so he could press his back against Lysander’s chest. “I facetimed Hallie while I ate dinner, but then she had to do homework so we had to get off cause I’m ‘distracting’.”

Lysander could agree with her on that at least.
