Today, in the Arria-formula meeting on the sanctity of treaties, LIE called for:
•Compliance with basic rules in treaty-making
•Preventing erosion of Art. 2(4) UNC
•Faithful implementation of Art. 27(3) of the UNC
• Respect for ICJ’s role in treaty interpretation

• Warns of the danger of the erosion of compliance with Charter provisions on the use of force
• Reminds States of the importance of the right of self-determination
• Reiterates support for the ICJ and ICC

Liechtenstein is proud to be among the first Member States to have paid its full contribution to the UN’s regular budget for 2026 on time and in full. As of 22 January 2026, 24 Member States have paid their regular budget assessments in full.

We hope all Member States will pay by the end of the month, in accordance with our obligations under the UN Charter.

LI is appalled by the destruction of a UN compound held by UNRWA in East Jerusalem, which is a violation of the UN Convention on Privileges and Immunities. LI urges respect for international law.

At IAHWG informal on draft resolution for Mandate Implementation Review, LI expressed its support:
• the draft can generate fundamental change for our work and generate positive momentum for the #UN80 process
• the process should be Member State-driven and transparent, with a strong role for the SG

2/2 Today, LIE reaffirms its commitment to establish a convention promoting:
- all atrocity crimes are at the same level
- existing intl. criminal law and #ICC provisions
- the role of the ICJ to settle disputes amongst states
- the meaningful participation of civil society

1/2 LIE is proud to participate for the next two weeks in the historical preparatory committee on a convention on crimes against humanity. This convention will fill a legal gap on states’ responsibility to prevent and punish CaH - showing that no hierarchy exists between the most serious crimes

LIE regrets that the #ICC Deputy Prosecutor Ms. Khan could not attend in person the ICC briefing held this morning in the #UN Security Council and underscores the imp. of respecting obligations included in the host country agreement

• Shared the SG’s concerns over violations of international law and the rule of law, including with respect to the use of force

LI is shocked by the reports on the widespread lethal use of force against peaceful protesters by the Iranian security forces. If confirmed, these acts would constitute crimes against humanity and warrant a referral of the situation to the International Criminal Court, by the UN Security Council

In closely monitoring developments in Venezuela, LI emphasizes importance of full respect of UN Charter, and in particular its Art. 2.4, in international relations and right of the people of Venezuela to live in freedom, with a democratically elected Government and on the basis of the rule of law.

At SC Open Debate on Leadership for Peace, LI:
• Emphasizes that leadership must be based in the Charter
• Notes that the next Secretary-General must embody these same Charter principles
• Commits to working with all Members in service of peace in the coming year

LI has again contributed to the Special Purpose Trust Fund for UN Development System repositioning according to the scale of assessment. This reflects our strong support for the UN RC system and efforts to enhance its efficiency & our conviction that it should be funded through the regular budget.

At the 11th Emergency Special Session, LI:
- condemned the forced deportation of Ukrainian children
- called for accountability & compliance with ICC arrest warrants in connection with the abductions
- reiterated the need for a comprehensive, just & lasting peace in Ukraine
