Creatives, it is never too late to bring more of a good thing into the world. If you like something and feel discouraged because β€˜there’s already too much ___,’ there’s not. Make more. We want your version, too.

These are the witching hours, the hours of magic, the time of ideas. The clock strikes one, and the single chime starts the spell: Oh, little artist, now you will be able to draw. Now the ideas will pour out of you. Now you will pen down ten thousand words in a hurry, and your head will snap up suddenly when the chimes strike thrice, and oh, oh, oh! Why so late again?

But these are the witching hours. The hours of magic. Who else does magic belong to if not the artists, the writers, the poets, the lovers? Who else can be changed by the chimes?

Oops, left out 6/10 β€” it’s a little different. Just a micro essay.

In left corner: Illustration of woman sitting with head in her hand before leaves that are gradually turning to ash. The text over the rest reads:

It feels rotten, doesn’t it? A strange disconnect, some sort of otherworldliness, a what-the-hell-is-going-on feeling that rolls through the flesh and burrows into the mind.

In a burning hot summer, hotter than the last, and the next will be hotter still, and the rubbish bins overflow, plastic scattering in the breeze until it catches in the hedges and sage and lands in the rivers to sink down, down, down, we talk of all of this. How can it be that we See, know hope, and yet say Little Can Be Done? Everything can be done! We could live with lessβ€”live gladly with less, couldn’t we? Why is less mistaken for lack? Why is good framed as suffering? Why is excess confused with ease?

The green curls in on itself and in a burning hot summer scatters to ash.

Day 4/101 of drawing + writing project β€” Cassandra's Curse. This one was born of frustrated thoughts and a conversation with a friend yesterday who was feeling this sense too.

Really wanting to keep sharing my 101 day project here, but also want to be clear that despite BlueSky auto-labeling some of my art β€œadult content” they have simply been figurative drawings and are not intended to be sexual.

Art of three female torso silhouettes against black background with marks from Niaux cave in France over them.

Text reads:
What if we were counting? What if we counted?
What if our bodies bore these same marks? What if the marks were children our bodies bore? What if we ground the pigment? What if we held the brush?

Day 3/101 - three for three.
Symbols inspired by geometric marks in Niaux Cave in France. Thinking again on women and paleolithic cave art + mark making.

Drawing project where for 101 days I make art + write something with it

I expected the dirt on my knees and hands and back from crawling into the narrow passage beneath the iron age village. I didn’t expect to have damp legs from kneeling for some time in the grass, watching a snail eat some leaves.

Left side is a drawing of a female silhouette in color against black with symbols from Lascaux cave drawn over. On the right, a poem reads:
We go out,
and we return,
and we go out,
and we return.
It repeats
over
and over
and over

There is growth,
There is loss,
There is growth again

We make marks,
We lay down the charcoal,
We pick it up again.

Into the cave,
Out of the cave,
rubble falls,
rubble is cleared,
Into the cave again,

It repeats
over
and over
and over.

I’m starting a 101 draw + write challenge for myself. This is pretty much just exploratory. I need to see what can come from just cutting loose and doing it. Giving myself this mini framing will (hopefully) help.

Glance back to this painting I finished in spring. β€œEntanglements in the Hedge.” Very caught lately in thinking about the strange way nature is often described as something one goes to. Like your body, your yard, your neighborhood isn’t natureβ€”it’s separate. Nope.

Called my congressman who voted for the SAVE act.

Me: What documents will I need to vote if this passes?
Staffer: a DL and birth certificate.
Me: The documents don’t match
Staffer: Then a marriage certificate.
Me: Will my husband need the marriage certificate too?
Staffer: No
Me: See the problem?

Mini Collage and a short, hand written poem. The poem reads:
No.
There will be no bending.
By the time the starlight reaches us, it is an ancient memory.
The stars, which sing of my future from across an impenetrable past, have no concept of the river time can be…
A yellow river, lit by sunlight.
But time is a wheel I wear around my neck. It turns over with ancient voices and sings.
No, there will be no bending.

Watching John Green channel allβ€”ALL β€” of his fame and energy into constantly talking about the negligence of letting people die of TB…it actually makes me feel like I might cry a little. It’s powerful to see someone commit like that. Powerful and rare.

Stunning Antarctic Sea Creatures Discovered after Iceberg Breaks Away A calving iceberg exposed a region that never before had been seen by human eyes, revealing a vibrant, thriving ecosystem

In January, an iceberg broke off of Antarctica and some scientists happened to be right there and decided to go see what had been living below it. Kind of like turning over a rock to see what's wriggling underneath. (by @ashleybvigil.bsky.social) πŸ§ͺ
