Since I canβt sleep, hereβs another hot take: The world would be a better place if everyoneβs science literacy was much better. There should be more emphasis on teaching basic science at all levels in school. Science isnβt just something nerds do, itβs the foundation of the modern world.

22.02.2026 20:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Extreme poverty fell sharply worldwide β even excluding China. Line chart of global extreme poverty rate, 1990 to 2025. Extreme poverty is defined as living below the international poverty line of $3 per day; data are adjusted for inflation and differences in living costs between countries. The chart shows global extreme poverty reduced from 43% to 10%, and the series excluding China reduced from 33% to 12%, with the two lines converging by around the mid-2000s and continuing to decline toward 2025. Y axis runs from 0% to 50%; x axis runs from 1990 to 2025. Data source: World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform (2025); OurWorldInData.org/poverty. License: CC BY.
Was the global decline of extreme poverty only due to China?
The share of the world population living in extreme poverty has never declined as rapidly as in the past three decades.

Black-and-white portrait of Dr. Jane C. Wright (1919β2013), pioneering Black surgeon, oncologist, and "mother of chemotherapy," seated at a laboratory workbench in a clinical research setting. She wears a white lab coat over a dark top and gazes directly at the camera with a composed, focused expression. In front of her is a large compound microscope with multiple objective lenses, adjustment knobs, and a stage, positioned prominently in the foreground. Her left hand rests near an open notebook or lab record book on the table, while stacks of papers or slides are visible nearby. The background shows softly blurred lab equipment and shelving, evoking a mid-20th-century medical research environment.
"Mother of Chemotherapy" Dr. Jane Wright died #OTD in 2013.
+ Helped shift cancer treatment from palliative care to modern chemotherapy by establishing methotrexate as a foundational treatment for breast cancer in 1951

Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.
