How Scholars Lost the Culture War over Texas History And how they could still start winning it.

The traditional chronicle of history celebrated the process by which β€œtrue Texans” wrested the land from β€œthe wilderness, the Indians, and the Mexicans.” The overarching idea formed the bedrock for a mostly 19th-century view of a martial past that average Texans seldom questioned.

β€˜One Battle After Another’ Shows Christians How to β€˜Work for the Peace of the City’ In Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, the best way to fight an endless series of battles is to play smart defense. Churches should take note.

Even the most dramatic displays of defiance can sometimes carry less impact than the humbler acts of protection and preparation, writes Georgia Coley.

I still don’t know how to go about getting a job. Applying isn’t getting me anywhere besides a first interview.

Does anyone want to hire a JD/LLM who focused on immigration and international law - but isn’t a member of any bar yet?

I was a 1L. I emailed someone that a professor spoke about for handling human trafficking cases. I wanted to go into that field because it’s such a problem here in Houston. And no response.

Maybe it’s the way I emailed? Out of the blue? Maybe it’s only something you can do in person.

I’m trying to convince Hubby’s cardiologist to sign off on Hubby’s TPD because he’s had Long Covid for 5 years. That’s a hassle in and of itself. Reading this is making me apprehensive.

Here's Why Stories Trump Statistics in Academia. . .

As scholars, we’re trained to build arguments with evidence, precedent, and logic.

But when it comes to communicating who we are and why our work matters, narrative often succeeds where pure logic fails.

Here’s why πŸ‘‡πŸ½πŸ§΅

Maybe the message is that our looks are a joke. Something to ridicule. Something to not fear, but rather beat out of frustration and disgust. That we deserve mistreatment for not conforming to conventional beauty standards.

I take this one personally. Like this person, I am short, brown, female, and not thin. And I mask. What are they saying with this image? That we are not conventionally beautiful and therefore not worthy? That we are okay to beat up? That it’s open season on brown women? This angers me deeply.

As this article states, fandom can fight back against the strange, online rightwing radicalization.

If fandom can manage to save itself from this rot, maybe there is hope for democracy after all.

As @glider.bsky.social once said in a presentation at A-Kon, fandom is powerful. Fandom has great economic power, for starters.

Also, many stories that have fandoms have strong political narratives. These stories can be didactic, especially science fiction.

And both mechanisms need to work together. They are part of the same side. They have the same goal, just different win conditions.

It’s like Plato’s public and private teachings. One is meant for mass consumption, the other is for a select few.

If you aren't on the frontline you don't really get to dictate strategy, especially if it involves brutality and/or death. I mean that sincerely not as some dunk. Those calls for nonviolence mean nothing without an organized strategy, leadership, and willingness to put oneself on the line.
