I think a lot of people assumed those networks were maintained by some impartial and near-omniscient Authority and came to realize that nope, it was just everybody agreeing that the networks were good things that we should have.

They had plenty of evidence, actual numbers, and an attempt at a theory (albeit more of curve fit to observed data than an attempt at a mechanism). It was at least as scientific as what most people are given as evidence for why the current experts are right.

What I've seen is that a lot of people play that as an attempt to get thrown off the jury. "Sorry judge, I guess I'm a biased piece of shit, no way you expect impartiality from a jerk like *me*."
