Humans tend to underestimate the pace of innovation and overestimate the inertia of incumbent technologies.

Clean energy technologies have scaled much more rapidly than predicted by modellers.

Thank you for the link! It's a good source that points out many problems that climate change brings about.
I was specifically interested in the timeline "2 to 3 years" you mentioned because that's something I've never heard of and could not find in the report.
Any sources specifically for that? Thx

The IPCC does not mention any timelines like that:

โ€œThe global temperature will stabilise when carbon dioxide emissions reach net zero. For 1.5ยฐC (2.7ยฐF), this means achieving net zero carbon dioxide emissions globally in the early 2050sโ€

What would you concretely and realistically do as a parent that would affect our collective use of and dependence on fossil fuels?
And would the lack of such efforts necessarily imply that you love fossil fuels more than your child?

Thanks for your reply.

I couldnโ€™t hear him mention Red Summer or attempted genocide anywhere, or equating it with wokeness. The reason why I asked was because I was wondering whether I missed this somehow because this would obviously be a really extreme stance.

Did he state in the interview that the systematic racism, Red Summer etc. are essentially the same as wokeness? I couldnโ€™t find that anywhere in the video. Is that just your interpretation? How did you come to this conclusion?

They pay off the energy and carbon debt within a few months.

After that their existence prevents the continuous burning of fossil fuels for decades.

Thanks for your reply. Are you referring to the Great Depression? If yes, would you predict that people who go through financial difficulties (e.g. unemployment or low income) nowadays tend to be leaner or less obese? Didnโ€™t dig into it but doesnโ€™t seem to be the case at first glance.

Do you see it as a zero-sum game where everything the rich have is something that the poor would otherwise have? If yes, have you found evidence that there is a negative correlation between the living standards of average people and the relative share of rich people? Honest question.

Could disused coal mines that provided millions of tonnes of fossil fuels be used as a potential source of renewable energy?

Yes they can and in Gateshead this is already happening. Heat from the water that flooded the mines is used to heat homes.

Image credit @_akhaliq. Transcript: Large language models are trained on massive scrapes of the web, which are often unstructured, noisy, and poorly phrased. Current scaling laws show that learning from such data requires an abundance of both compute and data, which grows with the size of the model being trained. This is infeasible both because of the large compute costs and duration associated with pre-training, and the impending scarcity of high-quality data on the web. In this work, we propose Web Rephrase Augmented Pre-training (WRAP) that uses an off-the-shelf instruction-tuned model prompted to paraphrase documents on the web in specific styles such as "like Wikipedia" or in "question-answer format" to jointly pre-train LLMs on real and synthetic rephrases. First, we show that using WRAP on the C4 dataset, which is naturally noisy, speeds up pre-training by sim3x. At the same pre-training compute budget, it improves perplexity by more than 10% on average across different subsets

The assumption that good models need to be trained on authentic, wild-caught data is not holding up well. It turns out that the authentic web is a mess and it's pretty easy to translate it into a version that trains better models. ๐Ÿค– #MLSky
