Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910) was a British physician. She was the first woman to graduate from medical school in the U.S. and the first woman on the Medical Register in the U.K. During medical school at Geneva College in rural New York, she faced discrimination and obstacles. Professors forced her to sit separately at lectures and often excluded her from labs. Local townspeople shunned her as a "bad" woman for defying her gender role. Blackwell eventually earned the respect of professors and classmates, graduating first in her class in 1849. As a successful doctor, she was an activist for poor women's health and played an important role in social awareness and moral reform.
