It is with deep sorrow that we announce the tragic killing of our colleague, Ziyad El Toum. Ziyad, 46, was killed near his home in Khan Younis in Gaza around 04 July 2025, while attempting, along with his relatives, to reach and assist an injured family member. Tragically, Ziyad and his relatives did not survive. Ziyad’s killing is a devastating loss for his family and friends and our entire team. We extend our deepest condolences to Ziyad’s wife, extended family, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

On this day in 1859, the Battle of Solferino (Italy) changed the course of history. Amidst the chaos and suffering, a Swiss businessman named Henry Dunant (ICRC’s co-founder) witnessed the horrors of war, and chose compassion over indifference. Today, the legacy of Solferino lives on in the principles of international humanitarian law and the work of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
On June 24th 1859, Henry Dunant witnessed the horrors of the Battle of Solferino.
This inspired him to propose a treaty for armies to care for wounded soldiers & create national societies to support military medical services. In 1863, he co-founded the International Committee of the Red Cross 👇🏽

Civilians must be protected and respected. Without excuse.
All parties involved in armed conflicts, whether it is a non-state armed group or a state, must protect civilians and civilian objects without excuses.
Civilians shouldn't bear the cost of the hostilities.

Without an immediate resumption of aid deliveries, we will not have access to the food, medicines, and life-saving supplies needed to sustain many of our programmes in Gaza. "Civilians in Gaza are facing an overwhelming daily struggle to survive the dangers of hostilities, cope with relentless displacement, and endure the consequences of being deprived of urgent humanitarian assistance. This situation must not—and cannot—be allowed to escalate further.”

Recent announcements by several states in northern & central Europe on their decision to withdraw from the Anti-personnel Mine Ban Convention mark a dangerous setback for the protection of civilians in armed conflicts. Honouring humanitarian commitments protects those affected by armed conflicts and benefits everyone, regardless of
the actions of others.
Year after year, the staggering human toll of anti-personnel mines is clear: over 80% of the victims are civilians. To pretend otherwise is to deny the evidence.
With too many wars raging and tensions rising, we must uphold IHL & the vision of a mine-free 🌎.

Withdrawal from any humanitarian treaty erodes life-saving humanitarian protections in war, and tears at the fabric of international humanitarian law (IHL). We urge all states to reinforce, not erode, the frameworks that protect civilians in conflict.”

“Now, we can feel the panic in the air, the sound of ambulance sirens is a constant, and we can see the pain and devastation in the faces of those we are helping. People are scared and are again forced to think only of surviving the next hours.”

Civilian lives, their property, and vital installations that provide essential services such as medical treatment and access to water in Nasir must be protected.
The wounded must be cared for without any discrimination. Safe access to humanitarian actors must be guaranteed to deliver lifesaving assistance.
