This is immoral, egregious and outrageous! Sadly, it is legal. Using its attack on DEI, the Trump administration has regressed Civil Rights 60 years. Couple that with gerrymandering & changing election practices and the result is de facto Jim Crow.

Nice kind of expressionist if I were looking for a term but really trying to communicate that it is not your typical reflection pool photograph.. composition, contrast and lines all work together

My feeble attempt to age the image in Photoshop. The characters are Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom, Molly Bloom, and as much spectre as character, bringing up the rear, Stephen is digged by Telemachus and Bloom by Hamlet.

Famously, not much happens in this book, yet all of life is contained in its pages. For plot, the novel depicts the events of 1 day (June 16th, 1904) in one smallish European city, (Dublin) mostly through the consciousness of 2 men; Stephen Dedalus, aged 22 & Leopold Bloom, aged 38.

Yes, those digital sales certainly support that. That is definitely the one thing proven by the post e-book era. Desmond's book addresses the issues; I'm glad it has readers but I don't see any value in having a million authors say the same thing and probably not nearly as well.

I'm okay with all of it except marrying someone from Journey; that's just something I can't abide.

Matthew Desmond's 'poverty by America' sold over 2 million copies, Thomas Piketty's work on economics sold nearly three million copies. I don't know if that's considered patronization of the wealthy, but it certainly includes the poor's viewpoint.

It's the world canon, not the English canon and its inclusivity is in fact resisted by most publishers rather than supporting its ongoing expansion. No publisher ever said we're going to be rolling in the dough now that we've got this Zora Neale Hurston in our back catalog.

Quantity is neither quality nor influence. Nor readership. The numbers will certainly increase even more as LLMs become integral to the process. When the churn of publishing produces a Woolf, Proust or Joyce I'll take notice. In the age of hack reading, books published are diminished even further.

And whatever rapidly evolving publishing capabilities means, I doubt they exceed the publication capabilities ushered into the World by Gutenberg.

Math aside, it sets a very limited scope to the novel, which is sad as it's always been an expansive form. I'm glad that Paul Murray, Delillo, Ferrante and Knausgard & many others are not constrained by such artificial criteria. The 4 authors could not be more different and are all writing in 2025.

So how would this criteria apply to Anna Karenina and The Life and times of Tristan shandy? Both authors having denied that they were even novels.
