Glaswegian but now an Aotearoan by choice. I like to read. I like football but really only Celtic and Scotland and the All Whites. Hope to see an independent Scotland in my lifetime. Mostly here to read other’s posts. #Scotsabroad

Ah, ain't it wonderful to be governed from London?

Quick video for the 'we saved too many lives, spent too much $, sent inflation to the moon, made interest rates go up, and now we have to pay for our sins 😢' crowd.
The idea that NZ could have 'opted out' of global inflation surge is daft. Almost as daft as NZ opting almost uniquely for a recession.

To take another angle, here's average annual deficit spend as % of GDP for OECD countries from 2020 to 2022. Where's NZ? Indeed.
So why are Treasury still quoting a dodgy IMF forecast from 2021 rather than doing easy analysis of what was actually spent across countries? Go figure. [Ends]

A neat summary.

1/4 - whisky's share of UK food and drink exports
1/3 - all UK food and drink exports
1/2 - UK's renewable energy.

And ALL of the UK's progressive parties in government 👍

Money for nothing is why we’re screwed — Common Weal The expectation that every investment must automatically offer enormous returns has bent global economic policy round its fingers. But guaranteed returns are why the West is in so much trouble.

Completely agree with this . Another example of ‘developers’ sitting on important sites is the amazing Govan Graving Docks. Could be a Shipbuilding Museum. Two listed buildings, one bulldozed, one so dilapidated it was used as a war torn scene in the film 1917. www.commonweal.scot/articles/mag...

Lots of women on Palestine Edinburgh march. It’s the Gaza children being killed looking for food that’s breaking hearts and prompting so many mothers to turn up. No arrests despite thousands repeating same lines that prompted police action y’day. ⁦‪

Around 1.5 million 16 and 17-year-olds will be able to vote at the next general election, under government plans to lower the voting age.

Democracy Minister Rushanara Ali tells the BBC the "seismic" change will ensure young people's voices are heard.

She confirms the pledge will be part of a raft of measures introduced through a new Elections Bill.

Genuinely fantastic news, correcting the odd imbalance whereby Scottish (and Welsh) 16 and 17 year olds could vote in some but not all elections, and had a say over things like education, healthcare and income taxation, whilst their English counterparts did not.

A large majority across Europe would support an independent Scotland joining the EU - more than would support the UK rejoining. Only the rest of the UK is against.

Denmark is keener than we are!

Disappointing to see England so anti an independent Scotland. I would like to know what drives that? Is it fear of England being left alone? Or dislike of Europe? Or British exceptionalism? I know England could thrive as an independent nation also, but English people seem to not believe that. Sad.

What I'd say to you is that kiwis just need to make better choices. Why don't they just sell a couple of their rentals and move to a safer quarter acre section somewhere nice? Build themselves a smart McMansion with a pool? Seriously, the country has lost its mojo.

This weekend Scotland has had dozens of marches by a religious cult that sing about killing catholics and Irish people, and are protected by the police. But if I chant "End the genocide. I support Palestine Action" I'm arrested for terrorism offences.

What a country we live in.

The sensible option seems impossible given current Govt. We need a public investment programme - preferably in infrastructure and other changes that help us (a) reduce our reliance on expensive imports (oil), (b) slow the flow of rent offshore (grey bars below), and, (c) get some jobs back! [12/n]

JRF say that only Scotland will show falls in child poverty by 2029 - poverty will increase in rest of UK. The JRF think tank says this is due to the SNP Scottish Govt’s social security policies.

A reminder that the @nytimes.com told New Yorkers to not rank Mamdani at all, & instead endorsed former hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson.

Tilson sits at a whopping .8%.

Corporate media trust is dead. They killed themselves by failing to fulfill their promise of holding the powerful accountable.

Question

Why does England want to keep + increase their nuclear weapons in Faslane, Scotland 29 miles from Glasgow?

Answer

Because Wales is close to England's population and since independence, Ireland is not available.
