Nancy Abu-Bonsrah is the first black female to be accepted to train as a brain surgeon at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the school "where the medical discipline of neurological surgery was founded." She was accepted to train there in 2017.

Dr. Patricia Bath invented laserphaco, a new device and technique to remove cataracts. It performed all steps of cataract removal: making the incision, destroying the lens and vacuuming out the fractured pieces. Bath is recognized as the first Black woman physician to receive a medical patent.

Yesterday’s Black History is Dr. Huey P. Newton, wanted to make changes in the community, protect them, and provide resources. In Oct. 1966 Huey P. Newton started the Black Panther Party. He also created the Ten Point Platform wanted 537 changes to help the Black community thrive & grow.

Lyda Newman was a remarkable Black female inventor who patented the first hairbrush with synthetic bristles. She is the third Black woman to ever receive a patent.

Abraham Lincoln (who helped end slavery) and Frederick Douglass (who fought for freedom)—had birthdays that month.
People loved the idea so much that it grew bigger and bigger. In 1976, it became Black History Month, a time to celebrate Black history for the whole month of February!

Carter G. Woodson wanted to make sure everyone learned about the amazing things Black people have done. In 1926, he started “Negro History Week” to teach people about Black history It was in February because two important leaders—Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass
