Bill Nye was a professor-at-large for a semester at my university while I was an undergrad, and he sat in on one of my improv team’s practices. He monologued for like 10 minutes straight about how great Steve Martin is, the guy just loves him.

The cliche Hallmark movie is someone returning to their small hometown and falling in love with an old flame, but they just made one set in my small hometown, so I guess I don’t have to imagine what it’d be like anymore.

Good morning, it's primary day in (parts of) Kansas! Off-year elections here are nonpartisan, so primaries only happen when enough candidates file to need them. This year, out of the ~2000 races that are up in November, two dozen will narrow the field today. #ksleg #electionday

“Wine Spectator” is such a funny name for a magazine. That verb I associate most with wine: spectating

At the very least, "Coop" is the stressed syllable, so it'd be /ʌ/ instead of /ə/.

Finding the crossover between my linguistics and poli sci degrees here - this sounds like the “put” vowel to me (IPA ʊ), not a schwa.

A major reason I got into redistricting was assisting on the Florida 2010s litigation, and a big chunk of my dissertation was about it. (I've still got the map analyses I did for it up on my site: brianamos.com/flcongmaps/) Not much of a lasting effect, apparently!

I didn't realize Wichita doesn't fluoridate until our dentist told us we needed to use fluoride toothpaste with our 1-year-old. Different situation, though, since it wasn't a secret: we've rejected fluoridation at the ballot three times! (1964 was 57%-43%, 1978 was 54%-46%, and 2012 was 60%-40%.)

Competitive eating legend Joey Chestnut was once again crowned champion of Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in his triumphant return to the Fourth of July competition after skipping last year due to a sponsorship dispute with a vegan wiener brand.
Chestnut, 41, scared down an incredulous 70.5
hot dogs in front of a raucous crowd in Coney Island on Friday and reclaimed the Mustard Belt for a record 17th time. The feat was close but not close enough to beat his own record of 76 franks he set at the competition in 2021.

For all the talk about the bluesky bubble, we have mainstream dems who have shown themselves to exist in a social world that has either led them to falsely believe Mamdani has called for violence, or at the very least to believe there will be no consequences for lying about it.

One of the things that went along with being student body president at my HS was being the person in charge of organizing reunions. Which is a crazy lifetime duty and I'm sure some ignored it as soon as they graduated, but ours was the one putting together the Facebook group at 10 and 20 years.

I think even books in series need standalone narrative arcs to work right. You get people complaining about middle books in long series being weak sometimes exactly for that reason, the author gets lost in developing the series-long plotlines at the expense of the individual book.
