Study says small editor group handled many problematic manuscripts β€” and a Nature investigation finds out who they are.

Bad science and practice undermines science as a whole.

It is a Western politician in a Westetn country using Western 1930s propaganda means and symbolism: you are very much supposed to look at it through a Western lens. That is his whole point for doing this.

Not necessarily. It will have to be in the OE area, otherwise this probably does not count. It could be for some herpes viruses. But, if reawakening in the presence of immune memory is sufficient is another question. If there is reduced immunity possibly, otherwise possibly not.

Added info from @deepeez.bsky.social that herpesvirus do enter via the olfactory epithelium. Other viruses can do this via the apical heperan sulfate layer present, such as MuHV4 and MCMV (in mice). This may indicate something more general.

I didn't have the time to look this up.

Another one who does not understand the difference between proportions and numbers!

The OP implies that pDC are missing. Are they? Or other cells, especially from the myeloid lineage have proportionally increased, even pDC may be increased, but proportionally they are less

results can be extrapolated to ME/CFS. Therapeutic oppertunities may eventually be derived from this, although how to enhance clean up will be difficult. Reducing (neuro)inflammation (e.g. steriods) may be the target.

A manuscript to keep an eye on!

This is a potentially exciting new insight. It would be good to understand if this mechanism is limited to viruses infecting the olfactory epithelium (respiratory viruses such as influenza and SC2) with involvemnt and the decline of olfactory sensory neurons critical, and if

Of interest is the involvement of complement activation, as previously reported by others.

The authors propose, in a manuscript stylistish made of for Nature, that transient infection can cause long-term symptoms via localized neuroinflammation.

Importantly, the authors saw viral clerance, which is in line with human data on SARS-CoV-2. Although viral debris ca be found, in both LC and non-LC, this does not seem to be the mechanism behind LC, with antivirals having limited success in reducing symptoms.

Using animal models and human clinical samples, they show that the virus selectively infects sustentacular cells in the olfactory epithelium, disrupting structure. Debris accumulates and triggers sustained activation of resident microglia cells.

A n example is longCOVID, in which neurological and other clinical symptoms can materialise after viral clearance.

The authors confirm that direct SARS-CoV-2 infection of the brain is often evaded, but sensory neurons can decline. This triggers a neuroinflammatory response.

Epigenetic memory of coronavirus infection in innate immune cells and their progenitors

Immune cells respond to infection, and their gene regulation will be altered. That is how it works.

No! It is proportional. Upion infection, the total number of white blood cells can increase dramatically. Myeloid cells such as monocytes and neutrophils can increase significantly. e.g. neutrophils increase from 50% to 75%. There less proportional space for T cells.

e.g. Upon infectiuon with bacteria Z, we see reduced CD4 T cell proportions, from 20% to 5%.

Should we panic, fear immunodeficiency, immune damage and start comparing bacteria Z with HIV?

04.08.2025 09:11 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Wrong. Upon inflammation many cell numbers will increase due to recruitment and proliferation. When looking at proportions within the CD4 T cell compartment, we see that all CD4 T cell numbers increase, and Treg cells increase in proportion the same: no specific induction.

Frequently you need both.

e.g. Upon infection with virus Y, there is an increase in the number of Treg cells.
Conclusion: Virus Y induces Treg cells.

Correct or wrong?

Be very carefull interpreting proportions and numbers. In some cases proportions are the ones to focus on. e.g. in differentiation assays, effector cells within a population, etc. Often numbers are required, e.g. claims about increases or decreases of a cell population.

Beyond:"SARS-CoV-2 leaves lasting epigenetic marks that reprogram immune cells, causing chronic inflammation and dysfunctional responses"? Very wrong indeed, based on false interpretation.
