The Guardian view on Labour targeting nature: the problem isn’t snails, but a broken housing model | Editorial Editorial: Rachel Reeves’s drive to speed up development is beginning to treat wildlife and the environment as expendable. Voters want homes built, but not at any cost

Don’t fall for the authoritarian hype – Reform and the hard right can be stopped in their tracks | Gordon Brown From the US to Europe and Asia, grievances are being exploited to gain power. But moderate voices are still in tune with the majority, says former prime minister Gordon Brown

Sensible chap that Gordon Brown.

Finally, we understand the purpose of the 2nd amendment. The right to bear arms, should some tinpot dictator like Trump come along.

Are Labour really going to try and tie current economic damage (and hence the need for further tax rises) to Farage and to Brexit, whilst at the same time insisting that persevering with Brexit is the right thing to do?

That feels like gaslighting of the very highest order.

I visited Istanbul as a student in 1974. We stayed in the Pera Palas hotel, where Ataturk and Agatha Christie stayed. We ate doner kebabs (then virtually unknown in the UK) on the old Galata bridge, and balΔ±k ekmek (fish in bread) cooked on boats on the quayside.

Hooray, Trump HASN'T won the Nobel Peace Prize. Venezuelan opposition politician MarΓa Corina Machado has won.

The committee commended Machado as a β€œbrave and committed champion of peace” who β€œkeeps the flame of democracy burning during a growing darkness”.

Such a perfect "anti-Trump" commentary!

When it comes to goods in short supply, I'm reminded of Sheikh Yamani, head of OPEC during the 1970s oil crisis, when asked, "What is the correct price of oil?"

"Whatever you can get - plus 10%."

No one will gain other than house builders who will push up prices to absorb the newly available spending power. There's a housing shortage, so prices cannot fall. The net effect of abolishing stamp duty will be to divert money currently going into public services into shareholders' pockets.

Belarus rarely makes Western headlines β€” but it should this week.
A quiet move by the Trump administration has just handed Alexander Lukashenka, and indirectly Vladimir Putin, an unexpected gift.

And if no one pays stamp duty, people will have more money to spend, so house prices will rise. The only losers will be public services.

Tories will scrap stamp duty on primary residences, Kemi Badenoch tells conference Leader announces tax cut plan for England and Northern Ireland in speech aimed at boosting fiscal credibility

Scrapping stamp duty is pointless since house prices increase to fill the available spending power. So, instead of handing the money to the state, buyers will simply hand it to sellers.

BREAKING: UK steel set for further hit as EU to double tariffs

The EU is hiking the tax on steel it imports, with the tariff to be 50%, double the 25% currently levied by the Trump administration in the US and the EU's current rate
