Good to see a Britain-Norway defence pact. Similar world views: ready to act and shared arctic security. But pacts with each neighbour are too complex. We need action: a European Defence Union with nations in and outside the EU, omitting neutral states or any who don't know which side they are on.

PM Keir Starmer is surely right to avoid a false choice between US and EU ties. Both are vital - and always have been. But basic geography places us central to European security. IF the US pulls away, they can’t tow us along. We’ll still be in Europe and will have to step up again. Cometh the hour…!

Interesting to hear Peter Mandelson on #thenewsagents saying the nation will be ready to revisit the EU question in ‘about ten years’. I see his point, but it will be sooner than that, as more and more people are realising what a clusterf*ck Brexit has proved.
