Certified key change hater. Eurovision nerd despite that. I have a blog at https://funcall.me/ where I mostly post about Eurovision.

This was a public service announcement.

I'm suddenly cautiously optimistic about Eurosong because this is actually good.

This Christmas, let's all love each other, blond curls or not, brown eyes or not (to extend the message of the song a little bit).

I think it just failed to transcend cultural barriers because it's just too slavic. Which is why it makes sense that it won KzM and flopped at ESC. Sadly.

One of the best debuts. This perfectly encapsulates the sort of melancholic, yet hopeful attitude that was common in Slavic countries after communism finally died the death it deserved.

Love it. When I was writing the 2002 review in my blog, I expected to be a little defensive of this song, but then I ended up writing a huge wall of text in its defence and realised that I can't choose anything else as a winner.
23.12.2024 19:56 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0#AdventEurovision day 23: Pascalis, Marianna, Robert and Bessy - Mathima Solfege
"Let's sing about music, not even as a metaphor," said Greece and totally made it work. This is absolutely irresistibly fun and I can't imagine anyone possibly disliking it.
youtu.be/ov6n4OkF7EE
Strongly agree, it's a total all-timer. I like how it combines verses that have a typical Slavic city pop sound that might be a bit too inaccessible to Western ears with more typically power ballady verses to make the whole song more accessible.

Norway isn't exactly my favourite Eurovision country, ditto for 1988, and yet Norway's 1988 entry is really good. I like that it remains fairly minimalistic and I really like her voice. The piano is lovely too.

#AdventEurovision day 21: Peter Nalitch & Friends - Lost And Forgotten
A lot of Russian entries were made by Swedes, Brits and Americans purely to score well, without any authenticity to them. Luckily, this one is basically as Russian as you can get while singing in English.

My favourite Danish entry of all time as well (and obviously my winner of 1989), it's impossible to dislike this.
21.12.2024 15:21 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0#AdventEurovision day 20: Hugues Aufray - Dรจs que le printemps revient
I love his slightly raspy voice and the song itself is quite hypnotic. I got drunk once and listened to it for about 4 hours on loop and never got tired of it.

#AdventEurovision day 19: Vanessa Chinitor - Like The Wind
Finally, Flanders managed to get a good enough score not to get Wallonia relegated next year. This is another song with truly impeccable vibes that I could happily listen to at any time.

#AdventEurovision day 18: A. Bourgeois - L'enfer Et Moi
I love everything about it. The mysterious and sultry tone, the dark instrumental, the dynamic camerawork, the slightly choppy lyrics. It all comes together perfectly. Its result is seriously disappointing.

#AdventEurovision day 17: Vikki - Love is...
On the surface, this is a very typical UK entry, but there's something irresistible about its simplicity. I like that it's very vague about who's the weak one and who's the strong one. Also, first entry with the fire-desire rhyme.

#AdventEurovision day 16: Katarรญna Hasprovรก - Modlitba
Thi got a very undeserved result. It has a brilliant instrumentation with some rocky elements and a great guitar, a strong vocal performance and really good lyrics. I understand why Slovakia ragequit after this came 21st.
youtu.be/bHQqFDdSNeo
The better entry titled Mata Hari.
16.12.2024 01:55 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0#AdventEurovision day 15: Milestones - Falter im Wind
ESC was lagging a bit with accepting rock into the contest, so it's great that 1972 had two rock songs. I prefer this one with its lovely calm folky vibes. Fifth was a very good result for something as unassuming as this.

#AdventEurovision day 14: Hind - Your Heart Belong's To Me
2008 wasn't really that great of a year, so it's even more impressive that we got one of the best entries of the year from a country in the middle of the worst NQ streaks ever. This should've definitely qualified.
youtu.be/IlUGHhQ3hOc
Fun fact: this won the backup jury and was the main reason why they were brought back in 2009. We don't know the exact jury split, but we know the combined results (they were revealed at a press conference) and Germany would've finished 6th under the combined vote instead of 19th.

People say that Malta was overrated because they sung in English. I say they were rated mostly properly because they sent good songs. This is one of their songs that should've scored better, if anything.
youtu.be/jDyURFQs4ik
My winner of 1962 actually, it's just so fun and upbeat. Definitely needs more recognition!
12.12.2024 16:00 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0#AdventEurovision day 12: Margot Hielscher - Fรผr zwei Groschen Musik
1958 is known as a Volare year, which is a shame because it had a pretty good lineup. Like Germany, which had a song about how great music is (we, eurofans, can relate). This should be remembered more.

#AdventEurovision day 11: Tommy Kรถrberg - Judy, min vรคn
Interestingly, this isn't the only song about a superficial woman named Judy (also see Belgium 1976). It's really not the kind of lyrics I'd expect to hear in 1969, so good on Sweden for breaking the mould.
youtu.be/vLo19lNGVys
It was also one of the entries the British audiences found remarkable (along with Switzerland), so it makes sense that you like it.
11.12.2024 01:21 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0#AdventEurovision day 10: Simone Drexel - Mikado
This is a really cool song, though the chorus is considerably more interesting than the verses. She wrote and composed this song herself, then abandoned music and went into medicine. Talk about being multi-talented.
youtu.be/u7L4DHZn_x4
I love this so much, it's such a pretty ballad. Certainly one of my faves from BiH.
