In Jamil's defense, I think it's more that he treats Tiffa and Garrod as his daughter and son-in-law. Which is perhaps only marginally less sexist, but still!

Also I saw someone else reccing an English-language novel, and if those count I would again like to suggest A Memory Called Empire and its sequel A Desolation Called Peace. It's got space colonies, weird brain technology, Mesoamerican influences, and eventually aliens. I think you'd love it.

I've heard that's a much more common design choice for metroidvanias than RPGs, though I can't personally speak to that since I don't really play metroidvanias myself.
