Ahead of the Holyrood elections next year, the Scottish Food Coalition have developed a manifesto of six key asks. These provide a key direction of travel for the ways in which they would like to see changes for our food system.

The start of August marks the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week 2025, which focuses on environment and climate change.

The campaign is highlighting our roles in supporting breastfeeding to create a
sustainable environment while reducing the impact of climate
change caused by formula feeding.

We can all do our part to stop plastic making its way into our waterways by making sure to dispose of our plastic products properly and reduce our use of them where possible, and Glasgow's shops and businesses can work to make more packaging free and compostable options available.

In Glasgow City Council’s Plastic Reduction Strategy they note this, saying:

‘The River Clyde links Glasgow directly to Scotland’s west coast. Through the Firth of Clyde, plastic waste from the city is discharged into the waters between Scotland and Ireland, and from there into the oceans.’

The Government’s Health, Social Care and Sport Committee will be scrutinising the plan for public health, health services and social care. The committee is running a call for views which is open until the 15th August.

This month is Plastic Free July and National Picnic Month 🧺

So, it's the perfect opportunity to host a plastic-free picnic and we have some ideas to help you do so.

What's in season this month and what is it the right time to plant?

Broad beans are in season and ready to be served up as a tasty side, in salads, or in risotto.

It's also the right time of year to plant your winter radishes, one of the easiest things for first time growers to try.

We told them about The Glasgow City Food Plan and the Working Groups, before moving on to some creative activities. The students completed a worksheet created by Hannah Brackston, following on from her previous work on a collaborative community tablecloth and ‘Let Glasgow Nourish’ crest.

Last week some of the Glasgow Food Policy Partnership team visited Bankhead Primary School to talk about our work. This was following a student chosen project this term where they’ve been learning about the food system.

Last week we had a tour at The Scottish Pantry Network kitchen and offices.

It was interesting to hear about their Prepmate meal kits which will soon be available in pantries and for general purchase, and fantastic to see their new kitchen facilities which will allow them to host cooking classes.
