Or we’ve all been like frogs in boiling water since 1979. I’ve been telling people to watch Network since about 2015. It is an amazing film

There were still white grapefruits, which I miss terribly. And I had them for breakfast in the late 70s.

A simple explanation would be rankings, through which universities are pitted against each other

The list: Diderot: The indiscreet jewels; The Nun
Rousseau: Julie, ou la nouvelle Heloise
Then there is the whole bibliotheque d’enfer. And there’s Ninon de Lenclos. And more.

I am of this view that this is just a poor piece of libertine literature, coming nowhere near the achievements of 17th and 18th century predecessors.

in the past week I have refereed two articles that clearly haven't bothered to read some of the works they've cited, or if they have they've completely missed the point.

21.07.2025 13:23 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

fair enough. there is, however, a way of citing or referring to an article that does not do it justice. I am thinking of cases where the article in question is actually the first to make a particular point -- a simple acknowledgement of that would be progress.

21.07.2025 13:21 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

It is worse than that. When people actually bother to cite the literature they often just pay it lip service. I understand it is hard work to distinguish your view from someone else who says almost the same thing, but if we don't engage we are just speaking into the void.

spending the weekend
making jam without patience
fruit rose to the top

I don't really care.
The raspberries and strawberries will still taste divine in mid-winter.
But still, a resolution for next summer: Patience. For better looking jam.

I was actually a physics major first. In Philosophy I worked most closely with Joe Rouse. Also Gaukroger (who was a visitor) and Fay. Had a course with Gourevitch. Others with Noel Carroll and Stephen Crites.

It is also the case that Wesleyan has done a remarkable job over decades articulating its values and that of a liberal arts education. So we’ve all been acculturated.

As a Wesleyan alum I can attest that Roth has been proactive in engaging alumniβ€”there have been zoom calls and public presentations. Roth also has been advocating for viewpoint diversity long before it became a battleground so Wesleyan is inoculated to a degree.
