I keep wondering why Portlandia is not making a comeback.
10.10.2025 11:40 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0*Officially* out today: Susan Stebbing: Analysis, Common Sense, and Public Philosophy. Iβm grateful to my co-editor, Annalisa Coliva, and all our excellent contributors! Link in bio. (Find the volumeβs introduction on my website π.)
30.09.2025 16:21 β π 42 π 13 π¬ 0 π 2Or weβve all been like frogs in boiling water since 1979. Iβve been telling people to watch Network since about 2015. It is an amazing film
21.09.2025 06:33 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There were still white grapefruits, which I miss terribly. And I had them for breakfast in the late 70s.
06.09.2025 00:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Ianβs this problem what skepticism is for?
02.09.2025 08:55 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A simple explanation would be rankings, through which universities are pitted against each other
31.07.2025 23:35 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The list: Diderot: The indiscreet jewels; The Nun
Rousseau: Julie, ou la nouvelle Heloise
Then there is the whole bibliotheque dβenfer. And thereβs Ninon de Lenclos. And more.
Or Therese, Philosophe.
30.07.2025 17:51 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I am of this view that this is just a poor piece of libertine literature, coming nowhere near the achievements of 17th and 18th century predecessors.
30.07.2025 16:52 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Not the best translation!
24.07.2025 11:53 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Sometimes you just need a basket full of baby otters to make your day complete. Oh, look what I found! You can thank me later.
24.07.2025 11:05 β π 2175 π 250 π¬ 59 π 25in the past week I have refereed two articles that clearly haven't bothered to read some of the works they've cited, or if they have they've completely missed the point.
21.07.2025 13:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0fair enough. there is, however, a way of citing or referring to an article that does not do it justice. I am thinking of cases where the article in question is actually the first to make a particular point -- a simple acknowledgement of that would be progress.
21.07.2025 13:21 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0It is worse than that. When people actually bother to cite the literature they often just pay it lip service. I understand it is hard work to distinguish your view from someone else who says almost the same thing, but if we don't engage we are just speaking into the void.

making jam without patience
fruit rose to the top
I don't really care.
The raspberries and strawberries will still taste divine in mid-winter.
But still, a resolution for next summer: Patience. For better looking jam.
@broadviewpress.bsky.social has created a 20% discount code for Harperβs IOLA LEROY that will also work for Harriet Jacobsβs INCIDENTS IN THE LIFE OF A SLAVE GIRL.
10.03.2025 12:35 β π 8 π 10 π¬ 1 π 0I often teach Pauline Hopkinsβs work. Her novels have recently been republished by @broadviewpress.bsky.social so hopefully they will reach even wider audiences. She also wrote a ghost story!

07.07.2025 16:51 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I was actually a physics major first. In Philosophy I worked most closely with Joe Rouse. Also Gaukroger (who was a visitor) and Fay. Had a course with Gourevitch. Others with Noel Carroll and Stephen Crites.

28.06.2025 01:57 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It is also the case that Wesleyan has done a remarkable job over decades articulating its values and that of a liberal arts education. So weβve all been acculturated.
27.06.2025 22:05 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0As a Wesleyan alum I can attest that Roth has been proactive in engaging alumniβthere have been zoom calls and public presentations. Roth also has been advocating for viewpoint diversity long before it became a battleground so Wesleyan is inoculated to a degree.
