My new (free!) article in the History Education Research Journal exploring what โ€˜colligationโ€™ is and how it might help teachers develop studentsโ€™ causal arguments.

Based on a case study with one of my Y13 classes.

It was such a privilege to help edit this book- I learnt something from each chapter about what it means to teach history and do it well.

Responding to SHP 2025: Part 2, Claire Holliss on Stories at A-Level The 2025 Schools History Project (SHP) conference was, as ever, a highlight of the teaching year and a stimulus for all sorts of thoughts. ...

Huge thanks to @citoyenneclaire.bsky.social for a wonderful @1972shp.bsky.social workshop on storytelling at KS5!

Following an earlier blog on @arthurjchapman.bsky.social workshop, here are some (incomplete) thoughts stimulated by Claire Holliss' session.

Settling down 2 hear the stellar @citoyenneclaire.bsky.social reflect on & explore the affordances & constraints of narrative @ A Level. Do stories bias towards the individual not the general? How can we tell stories about those who leaves few archival traces? Does story bias to the dramatic? #SHP25

Glad you enjoyed it! I wrote about WR potentially hindering historical specificity on Twitter (before Musk took over) here.

Donโ€™t you think we deserve an explanation? The limits of generic โ€˜explainingโ€™ writing frames for constructing historical causal arguments In a previous post, I argued against โ€˜sentence startersโ€™ such as โ€˜I believeโ€ฆโ€™ being labelled as the โ€˜language of the historianโ€™.[i] I now want to consider another manifestation oโ€ฆ

Looks great Alistair!

If you havenโ€™t read it already you might also be interested in this blogpost (when I used to blog ๐Ÿ˜‚). In it, I wrote about the potential pitfalls of students relying on conjunctions instead of verbs, nouns and prepositional phrases.

I've spent years encouraging students to use causal verbs alongside conjunctions. But this can lead to confused language/mixed metaphors.

Inspired by @jcarrollhistory.bsky.social, I'm planning to explicitly integrate metaphors into KS5 using targeted vocab

My chapter explores the accumulated wisdom of history teachers about extended writing, particularly how they enable and motivate all students to construct their own arguments in extended prose.

Practical examples range from a focus on vocabulary to paragraph cohesion. 2/3

I'm sure we've all had pupils ask us 'What's the point?' My article in TH198 starts from this question and reflects on how as well as teaching/assessing mastery of historical knowledge, it's important (and fun) to engage in the messier realm of what meanings pupils have made of it. I had a go ...
