Responding to SHP 2025: Part 2, Claire Holliss on Stories at A-Level
The 2025 Schools History Project (SHP) conference was, as ever, a highlight of the teaching year and a stimulus for all sorts of thoughts. ...
Huge thanks to @citoyenneclaire.bsky.social for a wonderful @1972shp.bsky.social workshop on storytelling at KS5!
Following an earlier blog on @arthurjchapman.bsky.social workshop, here are some (incomplete) thoughts stimulated by Claire Holliss' session.

Settling down 2 hear the stellar @citoyenneclaire.bsky.social reflect on & explore the affordances & constraints of narrative @ A Level. Do stories bias towards the individual not the general? How can we tell stories about those who leaves few archival traces? Does story bias to the dramatic? #SHP25

I've spent years encouraging students to use causal verbs alongside conjunctions. But this can lead to confused language/mixed metaphors.
Inspired by @jcarrollhistory.bsky.social, I'm planning to explicitly integrate metaphors into KS5 using targeted vocab

@jcarrollhistory.bsky.social says "historical writing is hard!" Well he makes it look easy as he draws on his years of experience in this area of history teaching to provide a tour-de-force of how to teach extended writing in history.

My chapter explores the accumulated wisdom of history teachers about extended writing, particularly how they enable and motivate all students to construct their own arguments in extended prose.
Practical examples range from a focus on vocabulary to paragraph cohesion. 2/3
