PM Carney's speech today at the WEF was thoughtful and clearly articulated. Lots of good quotes, but this one spoke to me:

"We should not allow the rise of hard power to blind us to the fact that the power of legitimacy, integrity, and rules will remain strong — if we choose to wield it together."

From the recently graduated to those who graduated twenty+ years ago, it has been an absolute joy to be reminded of the remarkable young people I've been privileged to journey with and learn alongside over the years.

Sometimes the connection is clear & straightforward; other times the connection may seem less straightforward but, as alum have shared, it is clear. We've had visits from folks in many sectors--heritage, museum curation, law, government, policy & research, labour relations, education, & business.

This semester I've had the privilege of teaching our upper-level History in Practice class (HIST 310). Each week, an alum has visited class to talk about how their studies in history have shaped their career trajectory.

Decades of mechanistic talk about university degrees as if they were bundles of 'skills' and 'prep' are about to be proved completely wrong (obviously). Want to get a real boost? Do History or English.

We're a complicated people, and we embrace that.

I know that Canadian Maplelea dolls represent specific regions and cultures in Canada, but there are not "historical characters" in the Maplelea line like there are in the American Girl line. I'm interested in the particular historical project of the American Girl historical characters.

That is fabricating lies. It is morally reprehensible that the American regime would fabricate and spread lies about the invasion of Ukraine. Let me be perfectly clear, and there is a great deal of evidence to support this: Russia invaded Ukraine. 3/5

This is how we have enriched historical narratives by including voices of those who have long been silenced--women, Indigenous peoples, people of colour etc. Fabricating lies about the past and spreading them around because it suits one's selfish purposes is not revisionist history. 2/5

There is a difference between revising history and fabricating LIES about the past. All history -- by this I mean the work done by historians based on evidence -- is revisionist in some ways. Sometimes new sources come to light or we view traditional sources in new ways. 1/5

Confessions of a Reluctant Nationalist I'd throw a punch to fight for Canada's sovereignty while reserving and exercising my right to criticize this country. That's a fine form of patriotism.

A thoughtful take on Cdn nationalism/ patriotism. Most Canadians are not trying to get back to some golden age of Cdn greatness. We can be honest about our problematic history and the challenges we face today and still love this sovereign country.

Honest patriotism Donald Trump is a hard guy to ignore, even for us Canadians. Lately it’s been even tougher because he’s been talking about us. And featuring in Donald Trump’s bloviations is almost never a good thing....

Writing a short column for a monthly publication means a weird lag between writing and publishing which reveals how awfully (pun intended) history unfolds sometimes.

Thanks for this. Being patriotic and being honest about our history are not mutually exclusive. In my opinion, honesty about our settler-colonial past and the willingness to engage in the hard work of reconciliation can lead to a patriotism that does not require denying our past.
