Weird story I've been watching across a few other social networks re: the Democratic senate primary in Texas between James Talarico and Jasmine Crockett. 🧡

Reading Ursula LeGuin's novel The Dispossessed which was written in 1974 and the way one character justifies atrocious political violence by appeal to traditional masculinity is really underscoring for me how much the present situation follows an old script.

In America you drop your kid off at school, get your brains blown out on the ride home, then the Vice President drops everything for a week to call you a terrorist, to slander your family, to protect the circumstances that led to your death so they can do it again. It is government by Alex Jones.

What JD Vance really means by this is that Maduro is bound by US laws but Trump is not.

Quite against my will I find myself having to engage again with Wittgenstein for the first time in many years. I find that I am too cynical to find the puzzle charming but also apparently too stupid to understand the puzzle.

Autodesk Fusion is completely bizarre and inscrutable until you understand the internal logic of the program and then suddenly you realize it is packed full of quality of life shortcuts created by thoughtful software engineers.

If after we blow your boat up you still float, you are a witch, so we can kill you. If you drown you are not a witch.

It's great that reporting on the double tap has spotlighted the abject criminality of this Administration.

But don't forget: Venezuela is not waging war on America or Americans, and the men killed were not combatants.

The first strike was every bit as illegal as the second.

Native German speaking friends, how noticeable is it when someone leans into those -ieren words because they don't know the German-root verbs that mean the same thing?

Not sure how many SBLs I will be going to in the future, but I would be perfectly happy for every west coast meeting to be San Diego and every east coast meeting to be Boston.

How did I miss the news about the Frankfurt Silver Inscription??? Someone mentioned it vaguely at SBL and I somehow hadn't heard. Very interesting journal article out recently that evaluates some NT TC issues in passing.

I think a lot of our fears about AI and the creative arts (I have them too) might also kind of be about society in general, specifically whether the masses are as happy with low grade slop as we fear they will be and what that says about hope for a better future.

James Bond supervillains threaten to blow up the world with their big laser unless you pay them a trillion dollars.

Real American supervillains embed themselves in the economy and threaten to cause a depression unless you subsidize their sex robots and the weird chatbots they use to avoid humans.

The session structure was 10-15 min to present a hot take + 15-20 minutes for discussion. They didn't all list list their hot takes at the top and the takes were intentionally not printed in the program! Hope the payoff was worth it in the end. πŸ˜‚ I didn't expect so much authorship stuff.

This was mentioned in the session as well, but you are right, of course, about cross-linguistic neglect.

By this she means, we should focus on the people around Paul and his environment more than on the "great man" himself.

Laura Nasrallah's hot take: "Leave Paul alone" or "give Paul a sabbatical."

23.11.2025 16:07 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Kathy Ehrensperger's hot take: (bonus: Paul perhaps focuses on gentiles also experiencing Roman colonization) Paul's pharisaism was flexible and adaptable rather than rigid (and thus in line with the sort criticized by the Qumran sectarians), thus he is "well-equipped" to guide and include gentiles

Michael Peppard's hot take: 2 Timothy when considered on its own has a good case for being accepted as authentic. There is also evidence that 2 Tim circulated in some cases as 1 Tim.

Paula Fredriksen's hot take: Rom 1:4 should be read as Christ's designation in power by the resurrection of the dead plural and in reference to the broad resurrection of the dead rather than his own

4) Romans is possibly written with the knowledge of James, 5) [main hot take] Romans is a refined version of Paul's typical speech given in synagogues during his missionary activity

Jason Staples' hot takes: 1) 2 Thess will become widely accepted, 2) Skeptical that the Christ hymn in Phil is pre-Pauline and thinks maybe Paul wrote it for didactic reasons, 3) Against his prior opinion, Paul in Philemon is asking for Onesimus' manumission as proven by multiple refs to the Jubilee

Looking forward to the hot takes on Paul session this morning at #AARSBL. As someone who has some idiosyncratic readings of some Pauline passages, I'm interested to see what qualifies here as a hot take.
