Agree re The Last of Us but I think that’s the exception rather than the rule. Quite a lot of recent examples spring to mind where S2 was better or at least equal: Succession, Hacks, The White Lotus, Industry, Slow Horses.

The narrative that anti-vaxxers or QAnon weirdos will come back from the brink if we're nice enough to them isn't tenable morally and doesn't hold up empirically. Ostracizing people whose beliefs harm others is a critical aspect of a functioning marketplace of ideas.

It's just so obvious: if you try to counter a political opponent by co-opt their policies, you communicate to the electorate that those are the salient issues and if those are the salient issues, then of course the electorate will vote for the party claiming it has all the answers.
