A long walk home yesterday in a delightful snowstorm. I passed this person on their own walk going the opposite way. After they passed I turned and took this photograph .

A vertical acrylic painting of a back lane in spring. A line of telephone poles go down the lane in decreasing perspective. There are puddles reflecting the trees and telephone, and browned lumps of old melted snow. The entire painting has orange and red highlights from sunset, though this faces to the east.

ICE DID NOT ORDER ANYTHING.

Sick of seeing this reposted by people who should know better.

Also I really really hate feeling like I have to defend ICE.

The closest you get is ICE acting Director Todd Lyons telling Fox Digital he β€œapplauds” the archdiocese for telling the parish to remove it.

A quarter of U.S. consumers are now financing groceries with buy-now, pay-later as economic pressures mount, survey says

One-quarter of shoppers have used BNPL for groceries, up from 14% who used the service a year ago, according to a Lending Tree survey of 2,000 American adults conducted in early April.
Meanwhile, 41% of respondents said they've paid back their loan late over the past year, though the vast majority have paid back the money in a week or less. Men, young people, and higher-income borrowers were more likely to make late payments.

Wow! This sounds bad!

It’s also completely incorrect

25% of buy-now-pay-later users have used it for groceries, but that group is a small percentage of Americans

Here is a true story.

During Trump’s first term, The Post got a tip that his doctor β€” the guy with the long hair who signed that first β€œhealthiest guy ever” letter β€” wanted to spill the beans. He lived in Westchester, up near where I lived at the time. So I was tasked with talking to him. 1/

Alright I went with the foreground I took with this shot. A car driving in front of me, 60 second exposure. The final version is a little darker and foreboding than the first one, but I think that fits the vibe of the shot more.

Incredible psyched to be able to get this 33 miles from SF.

BREAKING: Democrats have *flipped* a seat in Georgia's state House tonight.

Democrat Eric Gisler has won the seat, which was previously held by a Republican who resigned this fall.

This is a red territory: Trump won the district by 13% in 2024.

This Georgia flip is in a district that the GOP drew to drown Democratic voters in Athens into a neighboring red county, Oconee.

But tonight, Dems in Athens were out in FULL FORCE to swamp that gerrymander.

A huge night for Democrats:

β€”They flip Miami's mayorship.
β€”They flip a state House district in Georgia that had voted Trump by 13%.
β€”They keep Albuquerque's mayorship, while the liberal faction flips city council.
β€”And they get big overperformances (+18 & +22) in 2 Florida specials.

Okay, ignoring everything else about this: hyper-realistic police sketches are *worse* than hand-drawn sketches.

When we see a sketch, we intuitively understand it as a rough approximation, and we see similarities. With realistic images, we expect it to look *exactly* the same as the person.

For their final daily writing prompt, I asked my students what surprised them and what they would change about the course. A number are saying they’d change the amount of reading. How do you all think about the seemingly constant ask to read less?

this is similar to what I've come to think of as the "reverse turing test"

when people find synthetic text is "good enough" to complete a task (homework, business report, email) it doesn't mean the machine is smart. it means they were asked to produce something that didn't matter

it's diagnostic

One of my fave niche history facts is how many loaded pistols your average highwayman had during a hold up.

We're talking four minimum on his saddle, then at least two in his belt. Ideally three or four.

Because fuck trying to reload a 17th century pistol on horseback that's why.

An irony is that a religious exemption actually is workable when it's for a very small number of students. But conservatives - who have culture war rather than sincere religious objections to vaccinations - have basically ruined it for sincere religious groups like Christian Scientists
