Nearly all white phosphorus strikes by #Israel in South #Lebanon this past year fall within recently occupied Lebanese territories, as verified and geolocated by our team. This pattern of deliberate contamination blocks displaced residents from safely reclaiming their lands.

On why seed sovereignty is so important today more than ever...
Ceasefire in Lebanon does not mean that the Israelis have left. Here is an Israeli tank casually pointing at a Lebanese man in front of it in southern Lebanon.

Moments after Biden announces a ceasefire, three Israeli air strikes could be heard across Beirut.
That contradiction perfectly epitomizes the disconnect between Washington's rhetoric, Israel's behavior and the frightening reality for civilians on the ground.
“In my opinion, I will say nowhere [is safe], Israel is always changing [targets],” 71-year-old cobbler, Abou Ali said. “Maybe it hits here or there or Achrafieh, or Sabra or the camps. Nobody knows anything.”

When farmers have control over their production they can make decisions that prioritize sustainability, social justice and their communities. Creating more diverse and resilient food systems, less vulnerable to shocks and climate change.

Rethinking our current food systems becomes all the more important when the country’s agricultural production capacity is being systematically targeted by Israel

I recently wrote an article highlighting, among other things, the importance of seed sovereignty and farmer autonomy in Lebanon, and how heirloom seed preservation and propagation initiatives can help to build resilience against a changing climate.

Before moving to Canada I was the Environmental Justice Program Manager at the Heinrich Böll Foundation - Beirut Office. Where I worked along with diverse local and regional civil society partners on agroecology, food sovereignty, environmental governance, climate justice and eco-feminism.

I have previously worked on several #EnvironmentalJustice research projects such as the EJAtlas.org and Acknowl-EJ analyzing the transformative potential of community responses
to extractivism and alternatives born from resistance.

I also write from time to time (which is an overstatement already). You can find some of my work here: christophemaroun.wordpress.com

I have a BSc in Environmental Health from the American University in Beirut and studied political ecology during my Master's at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. I'll start a PhD in Geography at Université de Montréal in January 2025 on agriculture and agroecology initiatives in Lebanon.

I'm a Lebanese researcher currently based in Montréal interested in topics like political ecology, environmental justice, agroecology and food sovereignty.
