Currently experiencing covid again because even though I mask everywhere in public, I didn’t mask at home, which is an obvious hole in my defenses

What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Lifting/restraining echidnas for veterinary exams. Would definitely do again if it came up, of course. I was very good at it.

Stood in line an hour to pick up the local smokehouse thxg meal and it better be incredible tomorrow. I’ll make pies for tomorrow and Friday, when we gather as a multi-household family. If you’re also gathering this week, may you have a successful visit!

That darning/mending loom thing that gets advertised to me endlessly on IG helped me fix a hole in my favorite sweater! Not very WELL, but it’s at less risk of fully unraveling now, lol

There is some pest that bites me and only me? and lives inside my house and, yadda yadda yadda, I’ve just disassembled and rebuilt a cabinet that’s been standing in my house since idk when and definitely does not seem ever to have been infested with bugs after all 😒 but at least it stands square now

Not loving the palpable tension online, offline, and specifically in my home once my kid learned we’re having salmon for dinner (it’s currently disfavored)

Thrilling to reread The Handmaid’s Tale because it’s what my kid is studying in AP English right now and to realize that Offred appears to be GenZ based on timeline hints. What a time to be alive

Husband just got himself some fresh glasses frames, and now we both look like old timey NASA types—I’ve got the Katherine Johnson browline specs; he’s got nerd frames like fictional administrator Tom Paine in For All Mankind. Let’s get that Apollo program going, folks!

With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.

When I met Ryan Coogler several years ago, we were standing in a group of people chatting, when a woman with visible hearing aids walked up, and he casually began to sign the whole conversation so she could participate. She mouthed “thank you”. He nodded and just kept doing his thing.

So many things, so many! But the most amusing is The Princess Bride (book). He’d always elided and summarized parts I might find boring, so when he read it to me I thought that was what he was doing…and then I saw the two-toned text that read exactly the same. It was a dad joke years in the making

A horizontal bar chart titled "Percentage of Global fossil fuel emissions (since 1751) occurring in my lifetime." The chart shows how much of the total historical global fossil fuel emissions have occurred within the lifetime of individuals of different ages, from 5 to 100 years old. The vertical axis on the left lists ages in increments of 5 years, from age 5 at the top to age 100 at the bottom. The horizontal axis represents the percentage of fossil fuel emissions, marked in 10% increments from 10% to 90%.

The black bars represent the proportion of fossil fuel emissions that have occurred during each age group's lifetime. The bars increase in length as the age increases, meaning older individuals have lived through a larger percentage of the cumulative emissions since 1751.

Three specific age groups are highlighted with red bars and white text annotations:

Age 30: "if you are 30 it is more than 50%"

Age 50: "if you are 50 it is about 75%"

Age 85: "if you are 85 it is about 90%"

The source of the data is cited at the bottom: "CDIAC and globalcarbonproject.org." The graphic is credited to "@neilrkaye."

If you think climate change has gotten worse during your lifetime, you're right and there's a good reason.

If you're Gen X like me, more than 3/4 of fossil fuel CO₂ emissions have occurred in your lifetime. Even if you're a Millennial, it's at least half.
