SpeedCurve | When to use CrUX, RUM, and Synthetic web performance monitoring
Know the strengths and limitations of each tool so you donโt miss out on valuable insights.
CrUX isn't new, but there's still confusion about what it is and when it's useful (and when it's not). This is a FANTASTIC post from @markzeman.com that breaks down the difference between synthetic, RUM, and CrUX data โ and when and why to use each tool.

A blue book cover. The title of the book is Time is Money: The Business Value of Web Performance". The author is Tammy Everts.
When you write a tech book, you don't do it for ๐ฐ๐ฐ. You do it to share a topic you're passionate about.
When I get a royalty for my book, I don't think "Time to go shopping!" I think "Folks want to learn about one of my favourite topics!"
If you've read my book, thank you! I'd love your feedback!

Quote from Michelle Vu, a performance engineer at Pinterest:"Fighting regressions took priority over optimizations. The reason we decided this was because in the past, when we had performance efforts, engineers who were working on optimizations couldn't really see progress in our performance metrics, because there were so many regressions happening at the same time."
Don't let #pagespeed regressions cancel your optimizations! Add #webperf budgets to your toolbox. Get alerts when pages slow down. Quickly drill down to the root cause so you can speed up your pages and deliver a fast #ux.

This essential post by @tammyeverts.com chimes with my experiences; teams I talk with don't understand that there are huge gains to be had when they finally get perf under thresholds that they think of as "impossible" with today's JS-laden stacks:

A table that shows how a handful of web performance metrics โ Time to First Byte, Start Render, Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, and Interaction to Next Paint โ stack up against these criteria:
Correlates with meaningful content in the browser.
Usable out of the box.
Broad browser support.
Available in both synthetic and real user monitoring.
Correlates to business and UX metrics (like conversions and bounce rate).
Feeling overwhelmed by which #webperf / #ux metrics to track? Then this chart is for you.
As you can see, there's no single perfect ๐ฆ metric โ and each one has caveats โ but if you start with this set, you'll cover a lot of important bases.

Three popular web performance charts.
1. Correlation chart that shows the relationship between page speed metrics, like start render or Largest Contentful Paint, and business metrics, like conversion rate.
2. Waterfall chart that shows a visual timeline of all the resources on a web page, from HTML to images to JavaScript, as they're loaded and rendered in the browser.
3. Competitive benchmarks chart is a leaderboard that ranks your site alongside your competitors, so you can see who's faster and who's slower.
There are SO MANY #webperf charts! If you feel overwhelmed, start with these three:
CORRELATION CHART โ #sitespeed and business metrics
WATERFALL CHART โ how and when elements on your page render, so you can see why pages are slow
COMPETITIVE BENCHMARKS โ how fast you are compared to competitors
