The reduction since January of the section’s size – from 7 managers overseeing 30 attorneys to just half a dozen attorneys total – raises questions about how the DOJ will continue its crucial role of enforcing the laws that protect our voting rights.

The Department of Justice enacted sweeping changes to its Civil Rights Division. It introduced new mission statements that shift the division’s priorities, removed all senior civil servants who manage the division’s Voting Rights section, and instructed attorneys to dismiss all active voting cases.

Nationwide injunctions are an established feature of the judicial landscape. They allow time for the judiciary and relevant scholars to review policy in order to ensure it doesn’t conflict with Constitutional protections.

A nationwide, or universal, injunction is a court order that stops the federal government from applying a rule or order. Federal judges can issue an injunction in response to a lawsuit alleging that an executive policy or order is unconstitutional.

Task Force member and law professor @kateshaw.bsky.social testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee to share her expertise on nationwide injunctions issued by federal judges.

DHS budget request would cut CISA staff by 1,000 positions Budget documents show DHS wants to reduce CISA funding in areas like cyber training and stakeholder engagement.

Although the requests have gone unanswered, the administration proposed that an additional 1,000 positions be cut in the 2026 budget request shared last week.

DHS won’t tell Congress how many people it’s cut from CISA Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., leveled that charge at DHS Secretary Kristi Noem at a hearing Wednesday.

Ahead of the 2026 midterms, members of the House Homeland Security Committee have requested information from the DHS to understand how much of CISA’s staff remains after recent cuts.

Ahead of the 2024 election, CISA ramped up staffing efforts to ensure effective cyber defense. The agency hired over 1,300 new employees from entry-level to senior technicians between July 2021 and August 2023, bringing the agency’s staff to over 3,000 employees.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) work to secure elections against foreign + cyber interference directly impacts public trust and voters’ confidence in elections. Its specialized expertise is key to warding off evolving, complex attacks.
