There's a long but very finite list of key figures that are responsible for this whole mess. They're vastly outnumbered by regular people who dislike them.

People would be pissed at the Republicans. It would be in the Republicans' best interests to fold, and there may even be a court order that requires them to do so. If they still don't fold, then there may be violence directed at them.
