Why did Washington look at us and say, “You’re on your own”?

Because the President of the United States couldn’t close a deal on making health care more affordable.

ONCE AGAIN: Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress.

They have the power to keep the government open.

This shutdown will severely harm Maryland’s farmers and small business owners.

It will disrupt funding for crucial benefits like WIC – which supports 183,000 Marylanders.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers and government contractors could miss paychecks — or see their jobs eliminated.

I know there is real and justified fear in our communities. The firings. The high prices. And the shutdown.

But in Maryland, we never let fear stop us from protecting each other. In the military, I learned to live by the motto Leave No One Behind.

Right now, that is exactly what we need to do.

Our federal workers want to serve. And we are working hard to help them to do it.

Real people are being hurt by President Trump, Speaker Johnson, and Leader Thune’s decision to shut the federal government down.

President Trump failed to make a deal.

Now families across our state and country are left with the fallout.

I know that Marylanders are still hurting, but we’re going to keep pushing our economy forward together.

Under the Hogan admin, Maryland ranked consistently low on affordability, wages, population size, and employment.

We’re changing that. We’ve created nearly 100,000 new jobs in two and a half years and welcomed 35,000 new businesses to Maryland.

I’m proud that leaders in Prince George's County are stepping up to deliver for people, whether that means making it easier for people to start businesses or bringing investments for the community.

Days like today remind me why I do this work. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate community, tradition, and the state of Maryland.

Your energy fuels this campaign.

People in power are trying to erase our hard-fought progress. And, as a result, far too many Americans are living in fear.

I do not have all the answers for winning this fight, but I will never stop fighting to make sure we get it right.

Now, we’re seeing some of the most significant drops in violent crime across the country, stronger partnerships between communities and law enforcement, and common-sense steps to keep violence out of our communities.

In the 8 years before I was elected, Marylanders saw the nonfatal shooting rate double, the homicide rate nearly double, and a Baltimore that experienced a homicide a day.
