Map showing peak wind gusts today. Already a new record with more than 50 sites measuring 58 mph winds and greater.

For some quick historical context on today's winds (so far). We have already had more sites measure severe wind gusts (58 mph and greater) than any other single day in our 30 year history. Unfortunately those winds have fueled many wildfires (black spots on satellite). #okwx #okmesonet

Beyond all the horrors happening daily, what really pisses me off is this notion that somehow the private sector doesn't *need* a well-functioning public sector and academia.

Who runs the models we validate against? Who collects all the data? Who provides goods at *very low* cost to all citizens?

NSF's budget is about 10 billion but only has about 1500 employees. Cutting employees will save very little money. The goal is to cripple the US system of generating scientific research, including higher education.
