Today in Chemistry History graphic on Rosalind Franklin and the structure of DNA. Rosalind Franklin was a chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose work was instrumental in the discovery of the structure of DNA. She missed out on a Nobel Prize for her work as they are not awarded posthumously. Photograph 51 is an X-ray diffraction image of DNA taken during Franklin’s research. It was crucial in developing a model of DNA and confirming its double helical structure.

Happy to share a new little paper from our team - by @origichals.bsky.social et al. It describes a strategy to make SUMO1 more crystallisable by fusing it with a helper domain. Check out the nice ITC showing it still binds to SIM motifs. We are now working on co-crystallisation with SIM peptides.

This paper will be special thanks to my:
-first protein crystal (I may have screamed a little)
-first purification (so much buffer)
-first ITC experiment (spoiler: it worked!)
-first SDS PAGE (a rite of passage, right?)
Grateful for the journey, the learning n moments of “wow, I actually did that.”
