Hoard's LLC is a mostly goofy game with some serious themes, and this team has balanced those things impeccably through lots of meaningful work, including talking to union organizers!

Without going too deep into it, this conversation with Cephalopod Ink meant a lot. I met them at PAX and immediately knew I wanted to interview them.

We talked about the really great puzzle game they've made, but we also talked about the state of labor in the US and vented about our experiences.

It’s easy to say “wow isn’t it stupid they removed mouthwashing, that game does everything right in its handling of adult themes” but there is an unintentional but real side effect in that of admitting some games may “do it wrong” which is false

Critically acclaimed games getting caught in the itch/steam censorship nonsense sucks but remember that we need to, on principle, defend every game getting censored even if they are “porn games” because if you say some censorship is ok it becomes the slipperiest of slopes to all censorship is ok

As you may or may not be aware, indie video game and TTRPG marketplace itch.io has recently been pressured by payment processors like Visa and Mastercard to remove and delist "explicit content" from their site. This has resulted in, effectively, the mass erasure of works published by LGBTQIA+ artists. This is the stated end goal of targeted action against payment processors by the group Collective Shout, which angles itself to be "protecting children" by erasing adult content from existence. Obviously, that's bullshit. But there's some stuff we can do as a community to try and fix this! Payment processors do not give a single shit about the content their products are being used to buy. They only care about liability and shareholders. Collective Shout was able to get Visa and Mastercard to act with barely over 1,000 calls. It's a lot to ask every single person to make a call to their card holder, but if you have the energy, we highly recommend doing so at either of these numbers: Visa Headquarters: (650) 432-3200 Mastercard Headquarters: (914) 249-2000 Here's a little script to follow if you'd like: "Hello, my name is _____, and I would like to file a complaint. I find it troubling that Mastercard is blocking content on (the platforms you use) and making it difficult for me to make legal purchases. People are mad at itch and I’m not the feelings cop, so they can feel what they feel, but I feel confident in saying that itch does less revenue a year than a local HVAC company and it is trivial for the processors to squash them like a bug and lose nothing.
