Let there be light! On the bike lane! (& sidewalks, and murals.) Today #JerseyCity lit the new streetlights in the once-forbidding areas under the overpass at 12th Street., over the Coles Street curb-raised lane & around the corner by the big murals. The bit under the 14th St. bridge is lit now too.

Not a big surprise: Jersey City came in second. People need to stop pretending we’re some inherently car-dependent exurb, and embrace an urban transportation mix, with more and better mass transit, biking and walking.

I got to make some artwork for this good event, which is a nice reminder that the public space that lines our streets can be used for things other than storing cars. Stop by on Friday.

This Friday, let’s celebrate streets for people! We’ll observe Park(ing) Day, an annual, global tradition, by turning 3 Jersey City parking spaces into pocket parks for the day, featuring food, games, activities, and no-cost bike tune-ups. 1/3

Online navigable, zoomable route for tomorrow’s ride, with cue sheets etc. Note that the elevation listings don’t include our (smooth, separated, totally car-free) climb up the Bayonne Bridge bike/walkway, about 200 feet to the top/middle of the span.

The City of Jersey City has given me the best wedding gift ever by installing a Citibike station right in front of my house two days before I get married.

Thank you to all the folks at the Dept of Infrastructure for getting the south side expansion funded!

Redesigning Johnston Ave will make it safer. Narrowing travel lanes and adding protected bike lanes are proven traffic calming safety measures that will make the roadway safer for everyone.

β€œit’s vital for kids to have the kind of experience and autonomy that walking and biking around a community can afford”

I wish the author could get beyond the idea of the dilemma as between kid independence and safety, and really connect with the idea that safety *provides* independence.

Totally agreed. I got my license at 16, but haven’t had a car since moving to NYC half a lifetime ago.

I drive maybe once a year when I go home. But my license gives me free use of cars anywhere, despite basically not having driven for 2 decades πŸ™ƒ

#JCcrashes There was a four-car crash yesterday at 440 and Virginia Ave across from Hudson Mall. One of the vehicles apparently ran a red light and knocked over a traffic pole. This occurred just one block away from where Phillip Delancy was killed: www.reddit.com/r/jerseycity...

A lot has happened to PATH in the past 25 years -- 9/11, major construction work, COVID, etc. But consistent across all of these events have been ensuing reductions in off-pk service levels: since 2005, the number of PATH trips crossing the Hudson on Saturdays has fallen by *50%*

Governor Murphy still wants to widen a highway through Jersey City, something that will spew more carbon into the atmosphere. One day people will make the connection between the immediate emergency they're declaring and the longterm emergency they're enabling.

I wish the councilmember would use his platform to educate people on how the plan will drastically improve bus travel and not remove any parking, rather than leaving all that unsaid to stoke opposition.

Councilman Gilmore's flyers about the MLK/Ocean bus/bike lanes are sowing fear, uncertainty, and doubt on Nextdoor and Instagram. The flyers & poll mention the costs to drivers ("turn MLK & Ocean into ONE-WAY Streets") but say absolutely nothing about the benefits to bus riders or cyclists.

The Turnpike already causes multiple air quality issues. Expanding it will inevitably make things worse, and due to particulate matter from tire and brake dust, EVs won't fix the problem.
