Eleana speaks at City Hall
I was proud to take time on my lunch break today to stand in solidarity with students from Dickinson, Ferris, Snyder, Innovation, and County Prep High Schools who walked out to protest the inhumane & illegal actions of ICE.

An 87 NJ Transit bus picking up passengers at a bus stop on Bergen Ave
Starting a thread for some Hudson Countyโs busiest bus stops. Iโll start with โBergen Ave 115โs south of Glenwood Aveโ or SB Bergen Ave at Montgomery. This stop sees over 200 on and 200 off daily boardings. This stop serves the 80, 87 & 8.

Over the weeks, Columbia Academy, like the districtโs four other schools, had taken on an entirely new identity. It was still a place of learning, even if 210 of its 700 students were now studying at home. But now it was also a food bank, a counseling hotline, a missing persons task force, an immigration resource center and a refuge.
This small school district kept losing students to ICE. So it mobilized. wapo.st/4cvaYtc gift link

Newark Ave PBL in Jersey City
But ~10 people were able to clean 0.5 miles of a single PBL in 4 hours. It would be nice if @jerseycitynj.bsky.social had the state capacity to do this themselves instead of relying on a bunch of volunteers with bad backs and hand tools.

A short note to Kristi Noem
To a current Cabinet secretary from a former one
The New York Times reports that the Department of Homeland Security has sent Google, Meta, and other media corporations subpoenas for the names on accounts that criticize ICE enforcement. The department wants to identify Americans who oppose what itโs doing. Iโll save them time.

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. Itโs always a matter of will not resources.

Some children in Dilley were so distraught they cut themselves or talked about suicide, parents told ProPublica.
They said kids lost their appetites after finding worms and mold on their food, had trouble sleeping, and were constantly sick.

A lot of these laws seem designed to be de facto e-bike bans. I am skeptical they will succeed, because a lot of people are increasingly finding that e-bikes are a relatively-inexpensive and convenient way of getting around. They are going to ride them even if there is a law restricting their use.

I don't know where the equilibrium will eventually land, but I don't think governments will be able to put the e-bike genie back in the bottle, as much as car drivers want that to happen.

A 10 mph speed limit for e-bikes in Florida? It feels like a competition for which state can pass the stupidest e-bike laws. (New Jersey is winning that competition right now of course.) A total 'satanic panic'-style mass hysteria against e-bikes.

11 days after the storm, this bus bump out in a city right-of-way is mostly snow covered. There is a narrow path to the bus, with a giant slush puddle that most people aren't nimble enough to leap over.
It shouldn't take volunteers to shovel this out.

Was judge swayed by feds or states over stalled Gateway tunnel?
A federal judge said she would issue a decision โshortlyโ after hearing arguments about whether to release frozen funds on the Gateway tunnel project.
In what is considered an "extraordinary and drastic" decision, a federal judge ruled in favor of New York and New Jersey to lift the federal government's suspension of funds for the $16B Gateway tunnel project.
