An open air garden in the middle of a yellow building with arched porticos. There is a large tree in the middle.
A blue tote bag laying on a table. The tote bag has the words "UNIVERSITA DI PARMA" on the front in while lettering. There is also a logo with the Latin phrase "ALMA . UNIVERSITAS . STUDIORUM . PERMENSIS".
A light blue powerpoint slide with digitally manipulated ionic columns on either side of the screen. The text reads: "Ethics and Efficacy: Teaching and Learning Ancient Greek and Latin with Generative AI - Edward A. S. Ross - University of Reading - May 19, 2025 - Intensive ENCODE Spring School - Parma, Italy".
Had a wonderful time at Universitร degli Studi di Parma speaking at the Intensive ENCODE Spring School on #generativeAI #ethics and #teaching #AncientLanguages! It was fantastic to discuss digital competencies for ancient writing cultures to so many brilliant students and scholars.

Very happy to share that the programme and registration for #iGAIAS2025 @uorclassics.bsky.social is now available.
Our keynote speaker, Federica Lucivero (@ethoxcentre.bsky.social), will discuss "Environmentally (un)sustainable AI: rethinking responsibilities for Ancient World Studies?".
Three images spliced together. The top left image is of four people standing behind a poster for the "Distorted History: AI's Skewed Visions of the Ancient World" exhibit at the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology. The bottom left image shows a red trophy with the University of Reading logo on it. Next to the trophy is the text: "WINNER: University Collaborative Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning". The image on the right side depicts a sword split in half across the blade. The words GLADIVS ANCEPS are on the left and right side of the sword.
Absolutely thrilled that the iGAIAS project has won the 2025 University of Reading Collaborative Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning.
Looking forward to continuing our work promoting #AIethics, #AIliteracy, and exploring #AI's impact @uorclassics.bsky.social!

If you have a professor/teacher who impacted you in a positive way, send them a short email and let them know and tell them what youโre doing these days.
Teaching can be a thankless and exhausting job but one note can energize an educator for a year.
Yes, this is what some people told me defensively, and its the most ridiculous thing ever. No, the AI industry's environmental toll is not something we can look past. And no, we shouldn't be allowing our students to train the machines for trillionaire techbros instead of getting an education.

20.11.2024 14:44 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I was a bit constricted by the character limit there, but yes I agree. We do indeed explore how it is detrimental and explain that in our public facing work on this. We talk about this in our article here: doi.org/10.1017/S205...
Another article about this is in press with DHQ and will be out soon.
Generally, the work here is to inform people about the ethical problems surrounding using GenAI. We can't stop people from using GenAI, but we can tell them about the impact of its training, outputs, and overuse so that they can be just as skeptical as we are.
20.11.2024 14:37 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0There are quite a few papers related to general critical AI out there. I am mostly looking at its impact in teaching, but here is an example: uen.pressbooks.pub/teachingandg...
Related to the ancient world, I have a couple article out already: doi.org/10.1017/S205... and doi.org/10.1017/S205...
In the sense above, critical AI engages with GenAI to gain enough understanding of how the tools work and perpetuate biases to help others understand these implications. Doing this gives people the tools to identify AI outputs and thoughtfully consider if using GenAI will actually be helpful.
