An oval squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) hovers in a nighttime sea, displaying its natural iridescence. This species is among those informing new insights into molluscan evolution. The extreme diversity in the phylum Molluscaโ€”which includes squids, chitons, snails, clams, and othersโ€”has long puzzled scientists. Sequencing previously uncharacterized genomes helps to resolve the molluscan family tree.

From octopuses to snails, the complicated molluscan family tree has now been mapped in unprecedented detail, researchers report in Science.

Cold days are great days for atmospheric optics, with a beautiful display of a 22 degree halo, sun dogs and a circumzenithal arc over Airdrie in February!

The striking displays of halos and arcs etc. are usually seen looking up around the Sun as uniformly aligned ice crystals allow well defined wide refractions to appear as haloes, arcs parallel to the horizon and the Zenith, and small zones highlighted with rainbow colors. In this relatively rare instance such things were seen looking down below the horizon as the airliner cruised over clouds saturated with ice crystals.

This photo, compiled from some 8 mm video frames, may be the only image ever made of this particular display. I sent it to Les Cowley's Atmospheric Optics site and he was intrigued enough to run simulations to replicate and understand the display. His results, along with my photo, can be seen at this entry in this incredible site:

Decades ago I brought a video camera on a flight across the US. At one point I noticed a striking display superimposed over the clouds under me. I obtained a sequence of this, then later captured and merged some frames. This is a rare 'subSun', with faint 'sun dogs' on either side and an arc above.
