my hope, before we head back to the trenches, is that we were able to spend at least a day of this weekend according to our feelings. and that the trenches be actual meanigul work, or at least, let’s us be around kind, lighthearted people.

A humorless writer can never be a great writer. Not saying all writing needs to be a laff riot. But a sense of humor is a sign of a lively mind, and if you don't have it, you are lacking some part of the imagination.

YOURS TRULY, JENS LEKMAN: A postcard to Manila, with love  I meant to take notes at the Jens Lekman show. I really did.

thinking about the good ol' days i googled jens lekman in manila and got led to luis katigbak's recounting of jens' 2010 saguijo gig (which i sorely missed, but i caught his opener for kings of convenience. what a time, over a decade ago)

*finds out he is two years younger than me*

a very useful skill to have is being able to spot a narcissist. and to mangle a line from rounders (john dahl, 1998), if you can't spot the narcissist at the table, then you are the narcissist.

I’m at that age when going to a wake is an important obligation even if sometimes I, for some reason, instinctively deprioritize it. I regret that. So many people showed up when my dad passed. I hope to honor the loss and grief of my people.

Stephen Shore Started Taking Photos at 8 Years Old and Never Stopped

The work of Stephen Shore, his formalism, a desire to be invisible and just present the image, is foundational to my own work. I knew he was a prodigy, I didn’t know he was this much of a prodigy. Enjoyed reading this profile.

discouraging to see film critics lose their roles. there was a time, even in the internet age, where there was legitimate space for cultural criticism. our mistake was thinking billionaires would preserve those spaces.

i know it is modern to hate on love actually and the kiera knightly story line is indeed icky, but "just in cases" is a classic and the jamie - aurelia story is the best. i have watched their restaurant scene 2x already and it isn't even lunch yet.

A schoolmate uploaded a video of us attending his birthday party from the late 80s. I have no memory of this party but there I am in a short sleeved polo that’s tucked into my jeans. In footage that looks like a Wonder Years opening credits.

What's it like to have Frank Lloyd Wright design your house? This 101-year-old knows Roland Reisley is the last original client of Frank Lloyd Wright, still living in the Usonian home designed by the famed architect. Even after 73 years, he told NPR, he still marvels at the beauty of ...

Food Delivery: Fresh from the West Philippine Sea ('25 Baby Ruth Villarama): Lots of great footage that makes what might feel like a distant issue very, very real.

lastly, it was good to see that documentary photographer and filmmaker, nana buxani, was one of the cinematographers of "food delivery." she is co-director of "minsan lang sila bata" a film on child labor that i saw as a high schooler and have never forgotten.

what i got was a docu that was more... vibes forward. yet, to this privileged manileΓ±o, the vibes were incredibly moving. especially the scenes from the supply run to two of our outposts in the west philippine sea.

i think i wanted a little more structure from "food delivery," the documentary that gives us a glimpse into the lives of the military personnel and fisherfolk who inhabit our west philippine sea. a little more definition, to accompany the beautiful footage.

Have we, in the need to make every aspect of modern life productive, been actually unsuccessful in living the bike lifeβ€” being simple, spontaneous, and ungovernable.
