I do a lot of rebinding through Big Picture to make the most of the extras, on console it's usually like select, map, and for some games, they might even go the extra annoying mile and add gesture controls for menu shortcuts.
Rebinding in mind, you can have 6 buttons for on-touch behavior in regions

I used to loathe the touchpad, but over time I've warmed up on it purely for the aspect of being 3 additional buttons on a controller, in an economy where people are far too stuck on the regular controller design. Never used the touching part though, or the gestures.
