I remember watching this for the first time 30+ years ago and it felt like watching past history.

I've re-watched it twice in the past 5-10 years and it feels vividly current.

... , all of this stuff had been imperceptible to me 6 months prior, and now made me desperately want to jump back on the plane back to London.

I still (and will always) love NYC, but there are definitely things I don't miss.

I remember my first cab ride from JFK to Manhattan after having moved from NYC to London. It had been about 6 months since I had been in the US -- the longest in years.

The advertising in the cab, on screen and audio, was an unending and intense "BUY NOW!!". It was jarring.

If you can believe it, that fact looks even more insane now that I’ve lived here for a while than it used to when I was still living in the US.

FWIW here similarly having the NHS for baseline and private options on top has worked incredibly well for me (single data point).

More generally the system has imbalances that need to be addressed but I think it’s generally superior to what’s happening in the US.
