My kid is doing a Python summer camp and asked me to look at the code heβd written for a text adventure game.
Couldnβt help saying βyuckβ when I saw he was using the global keyword.
Other than that it was looking good

Hacked Claude Code to see what it does. It's kinda funny.

Off to Birmingham to deliver a workshop on AI for consulting professionals.
Slightly worried about mutant rats.
Started to log my pen plotting build journey

Thinking about building or getting a draw bot/ pen plotter.
Do I know anyone who is into this that could give me some advice?
Added a simple code editor component to my blog toolkit - trying to keep it light as I build more tooling around teaching.

ππ Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
This has been on my backlog for a while.
The protagonist is a seemingly weak woman who is stronger than all around.
Dragons, magic, murder and sex. A lot of sex or thinking about it anyway :)
ππ Axiomβs End by Lindsay Ellis
I enjoyed this a lot though found the main character a bit annoying. The narrative was excellent, the aliens great and Iβd like to know more about its culture.
Interesting questions about relationships with different power and cultural norms. Who changes who?
ππ House of Chains by Steven Erikson
Iβm really enjoying this universe. Some longer arced storylines brought into land and lots of seeds sown for future development.
While the surface level is more and more understandable itβs clear that there is a wider context that is gradually being revealed.
ππ The Hunterβs Code by Oleg Sapphire
Travelling from Belfast to Brighton - a bit of entertaining LitRPG.
Fairly good and Iβll probably work my way through the series. The protagonist is a bit sexier but otherwise likeable enough.
Murderbot is coming to Apple TV!!!
Amazing. Just watched the trailer and it looks cool - though I think I always assumed that it had a female face and I canβt remember if that was from the books or from me?
Another reason to keep Apple TV while I wait for the next season of for all mankind.
ππ Memories of Ice by Steven Erikson
Okay - itβs taken to the end of the third book for me to start to understand this world.
Itβs epic and worth the time.
Epic stories of compassion, honour and sacrifice (with dollops of magic, gods and unrelenting empires).
Excited to keep going.

I really enjoyed working with redwood and this could be a meaningful step towards making local first development a first class choice.
Just published my latest course with Pluralsight!
If youβre working with Flask and want to get a solid grip on authentication and authorisation, this oneβs for you:

ππ Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer
This is in a lot of folks top ten but I didnβt really like it.
Had lots of elements I normally love - dystopia, sci fi, unreliable narrators - but for some reason it didnβt work for me.
Donβt think Iβll read the rest of the series.
Some client work cancelled this week.
A bit annoying for cash flow but lets me catch up on some other work.
Also, Iβm at the cinema at 1.30pm. Could be worse :)
ππ Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson
Second book of the Malazan series - I think I almost understand whatβs going on but still not completely.
Really interesting characters and compelling plot even as thereβs still so much unexplained. I think Iβm committed now!
A purple post it listing tasks to be done today. Lots of recording and editing and writing.
Itβs a content creation day around here.
Trying to keep my ADHD brain engaged with lists and smaller goals.
With so many spinning plates it can be hard to stay focused.
Speaking at ELI5 event about Local First today.

Happy pi-day!
Teaching Python at CERN this week. Since the release of 3.13, Iβve started most courses joking how as a mathematician I canβt wait for 3.14 because then at will have Pi-thon.
Even this group of the worldβs best scientists and engineers didnβt laugh.
Think I need to move on.

Did you know that you can install Bluesky as an app from any of the main browsers? It will no longer appear as a tab in your browser but will display as it's own thing.
No more trying to find the right tab!
I've done this on my phone before.
Here are the three button presses in Chrome:

Find it super frustrating how much there is for React around and would love to help build out some more of the infra for Vue and other frameworks.
ππ The Inevitable Ruin by Matt Dinniman
Just finished the latest book in this series. A key beat as it brought lots of open threads into land.
Funny, irreverent and occasionally messed up.
