This "no" is not negotiable. A Guatemalan court ordered the government to consult with the Xinka People over the future of Pan American Silver's Escobal mine. This May, the Xinka People said no to the reopening of the mine and called for it to be closed permanently.

It couldn't be clearer. The Xinka people led a robust, seven year consultation process, mandated by the court, to decide whether they wanted Pan America's silver mine in Guatemala. They decided they do not. It's time for the company and the Canadian & Guatemalan gov'ts to respect their decision.

while we, civil society, call for change, often our calls are for incremental tweaks to the system, which can actually reinforce it.

And make us, at times, part of the problem.

But we can do more, and better.
