Published today. We found that hepatitis B was the leading cause of cirrhosis and HCC in southern Malawi. HCC is diagnosed at a very late stage. Huge opportunity to prevent liver-related death with community hepatitis B test and treat programmes. #hepsky #idsky

Neurocysticercosis school outbreak in Belgium
Human cysticercosis results from ingesting microscopic Taenia solium eggs shed by a tapeworm carrier, forming cystic larvae (ie, cysticerci) in tissues. These larvae normally encyst in the pig, the natural intermediate host. Upon consumption by humans, they develop into a new intestinal tapeworm. Affecting the human brain, neurocysticercosis is responsible for a third of epilepsy cases in endemic tropical and subtropical regions.1,2
1/ Imagine being a kid, just vibing at school, when boomβa tapeworm decides to set up camp in your brain. π§ ποΈ
Welcome to the wildest, most unexpected outbreak Belgium has seen. And no, this isnβt an episode of House MD but it reads like it.

Key public health message
What did you want to address in this study and why?
The parasite Toxoplasma gondii can cause severe disease in humans. People can acquire the parasite by eating raw or undercooked infected meat or unwashed fruits or vegetables contaminated with the parasite. We wanted to investigate T. gondii in commercial ready-to eat (RTE) salads in European countries to estimate the importance of these food products as sources of T. gondii.
What have we learnt from this study?
Using a molecular method, we detected T. gondii in 4.1% of 3,293 RTE salad samples from 10 European countries. Sampling in winter season, sampling and packaging of salad in Northern Europe and salad grown in Western Europe were associated with detection of T. gondii from salad samples.
What are the implications of your findings for public health?
As RTE salads are intended to be consumed raw without further processing, T. gondii in salad from European countries may lead to infections in humans. Measures to prevent and control contamination of salads are necessary. Further washing of RTE salads might be recommended for specific risk groups such as pregnant people.
π₯ Washing your salad before you eat it is always a good idea, even if it is a "ready-to-eat" product
Calero-Barnal et al. tested 3,329 samples from 10 European countries for Toxoplasma gondii

Dr Meera Chand, Deputy Director at the UK Health Security Agency, said:
"Our Health Protection Teams are working at pace to get in touch with people who were in contact with this individual while they were in England, to ensure they seek appropriate medical care and testing should they develop any symptoms. The infection does not spread easily between people, and the overall risk to the UK population is very low."
We are currently working to identify contacts of an individual who travelled to England while they were unwell with Lassa fever. This individual returned to Nigeria, where they were diagnosed.
