26.10.2025 01:19 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 040 years ago, in Grade 6 we spent a week at the Island School, leaning about the environment. One night we went for a walk and we ended up with a view of the coastline. Still remember it. Aside from the CN/Bay St. Towers it was flat and beautiful. Now it would be so cluttered, a wall of towers.

Also, Canada deserves something nice. We've been assholes to them for a while now.

19.01.2025 21:07 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Think about that. What exactly is so intrinsically special about Americans that Americans have to be the first to meet an alien?
Contrast with the book where there were five seats in the pod and an international group travelled to meet the aliens (and who looked like loved ones). (Post 4)
In Contact the movie, it's the US government (not The UN) that decides to build the machine. Built in the United States and administered by NASA.
When Haddon tells Ellie about the existence of the second machine he tells her "They still want an American to go". (Post 3)
@jamellebouie.net talks on the @unclearpod.bsky.social episode about ID4 being about the world deals with an external threat under American leadership while Contact was more about collective action. He's wrong. Once the US government took over, they really took over. (Post 2)

I ask because Tyler is a nephew of one of my best friends, so it was nice to have an actual connection to #MyBelovedHabs.
One of most interesting books I've ever read argues that while a subculture (as represented by its style) may start out political, it eventually becomes mainstreamed (particularly through music/fashion), losing its political meaning in the process. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subcult...

We've lived in the "Bloordale" area since the early 90's and it's only when the neighbourhood became gentrified (and... um, named Bloordale) that traffic became a nightmare.
