The United States Military Academy has just eliminated all Cadet clubs and activities for POC. Most of these have existed for decades like the Society of Black Engineers. They were there when I was a Cadet in 1987. All of the religious ones remain. This isn’t DEI. It’s white Christian Nationalism.

I've been on a midcentury mysteries kick of late. You know what common plot device disappears from whodunnits when no-fault divorce becomes widespread? The "(s)he will never grant me the divorce" motive for homicide. Just basically gone from the genre by the mid 1970s unless it's historical.

Story 10 is done for StoryaDay May. (I forgot to update on Saturday, though I did write my 9th story that day.) Sunday was my usual day off, and I ended up taking yesterday off due to unusual circumstances. I try not to 2 days off in a row from writing, challenge or no, but coming back is key.

I'm so tired today. And I felt so un-creative. But I still managed to write my story for StoryaDay May and I'm so proud of myself. I was not sure I'd be able to do it, but I actually like what I came up with. Story 8 done! (Took yesterday off)

Day 8, Story 7 of StoryaDay May. Today's prompt was a about characters and power dynamics. It was a little more challenging but really interesting to work with. Another story complete!

So far I've written 6 stories (out of 7 days) and what has been most interesting is how I've gotten through the prompts I thought would be hardest for me. It's a fun way to experiment outside of my comfort zone, without be able to shy away from my weaknesses (like today's - I suck at titles).

I wasn't planning on posting about my StoryaDay progress all month, but I guess I have thoughts, and here we are. Today's prompt was to write a short story with the title longer than the story. Was not sure I'd be able to do this one, but I wrote a story as a couplet poem, and pretty quick, too.

Elsewhere in the world I just described the primary audience for The Dead Boy Detectives as "bisexual Millennial/Gen Z cottage goths," which might sound like a dig but honestly is not. It's a vibe and esthetic we could probably use more of.

It's more of a vignette or fragment than a story, but it I actually really like it. I don't think I was supposed to..

I wrote my 5th story for StoryaDay May, after taking yesterday off. Today's prompt was to write a story that that included a list of words. I had a lot of fun with this one. I think it's easy to dislike these types of prompts but I always took them as a challenge and had fun with them.

I have written 4 stories in a row for StoryaDay May. It feels good to have 4 complete stories even if they need work. Sunday is my typical writing day-off, so I’ll be taking tomorrow off.

Day 3 of StoryaDay May. Write a story in a 100 words about an object. I expected this to be a challenge but (and?) it was a lot of fun. I made it in 103 words - so not quite there but close enough for me. The warmup was also a fun exercise in description which I struggle (neglect?) with sometimes.
