I’m looking forward to continuing to engage both with the development of work in the WMD field applying futures and foresight methods, but also looking more broadly at the biological and chemical weapons regimes and their politics (curious to see how it looks alongside nuclear).

Having dived into the world of WMD beyond nuclear, I also got to assist on BASIC’s collaborative work with SPRU applying futures and foresight at the intersection of AI and chemical and biological weapons.

Outside of BASIC, I gave a talk at the LSE Library on intersectional approaches to peace and security - and how disarmament fits in (loved this!), and also presented my research on ‘Disruptive Diplomacy’ at the BISA GNO Annual Conference.

Alongside this, the EVN has grown in numbers, run Masterclasses, speed networking, mentoring sessions, and just launched two new policy cycles, on Nuclear Harm Reduction, and Futures and Foresight respectively.

50 EVN members researched and wrote policy papers making innovative recommendations for strengthening the humanitarian impacts agenda within the NPT regime. This is a published anthology available to read BASIC’s website! We ended this work with a side event at the 2024 NPT PrepCom in collab w IPPNW

We built a focus on the relationship between the Humanitarian Initiative and the NPT. After an insightful webinar with senior experts, discussing prospective opportunities and obstacles for the humanitarian impacts agenda within the NPT, we launched a policy cycle on this very topic.

But before this, I’ve had two wonderful years co-coordinating the Emerging Voices Network, and I’m so proud of what we’ve done! And thanks to Declan Penrose who’s been a legend of a colleague to work on the EVN with. Here’s a little recap:

Our first case study will investigate the UK’s nuclear weapons programme and associated harms. Would really welcome any leads/resources you may have!

Our project on Nuclear Weapons Harm Reduction will be looking into the range of humanitarian, environmental, + social harms linked to nuclear weapons programmes, intending to make recommendations on how these harms can be redressed, mitigated, and prevented, whilst building accountability for NWS.

We’re building an impartial framework to help comprehensively monitor the implementation of commitments made by NPT member states. This will be a tool available to the nuclear community and wider public.
