What happened at Hiroshima? Eighty years ago, the US dropped a nuclear bomb on Japan, theย onlyย nuclear weapon ever used in warfare.

A powerful report from the BBC on the impact of the US atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ... though it may serve the UK audience to be honest about British nuclear testing on other countries (Australia, Kiribati, USA) too. #NuclearTruth

Where-ever you are in the world, we can ALL work toward a world free of nuclear weapons.

80 years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we must ensure that todayโ€™s conflicts donโ€™t become tomorrowโ€™s nuclear catastrophes. #HumanRaceNotArmsRace

Finally, while some trot out the phrase "a world free from nuclear weapons" almost as a token, some pale wish or half hoped for dream, Hibakusha and all survivors of nuclear violence remind the world it is the work of all of us.

Let's honour this and rid the world of nuclear weapons.

3. The song of peace from Hiroshima performed at the end of the ceremony is a reflection of so much of the spirit we have come to know from Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) - not simply sorrow, but resilience and determination and a vision beyond the devastation

2. The speech of the Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture was brilliant. He spoke of the fallacies of nuclear deterrence with such articulate force.

His message is an important contribution to the growing dialogue on breaking down nuclear deterrence. Seek it out.

The official commemoration in Hiroshima (live-streamed) has just ended. A few reflections on it:

1. The speech of the Children Representatives was powerful & heartening - grounded in respect and fueled by hope and determination. We can all learn from these children's beautiful works.

The atomic bomb marker inside your body It is 80 years since the first nuclear weapon test โ€“ codenamed Trinity โ€“ detonated in the desert of New Mexico. Today the hidden legacy the explosion can still be found in our cells.

When we say that nuclear weapons are in our DNA we are not saying it lightly

Each of our bodies - & those of every living creature - carries the violence of nuclear weapons "testing" in our bodies

These bombs transformed our environment

We live our lives with this harm

Today there are over 12,400 nuclear weapons.

SIPRI & FAS warn a dangerous new nuclear arms race is energing. Arms control regimes are severely weakened. Nearly all of the nine nuclear-armed states are continuing intensive nuclear modernization, upgrading existing weapons, adding new versions.

My stepfather was a teen when nuclear bombs first dropped. He would recall people celebrating initially - it had been a long and brutal war...on the back of another war a gen before. They were told this stopped the war...but they soon learned it was the start of a different war, one affecting us all

Those who have experienced nuclear violence - from the deserts of New Mexico to Hiroshima and Nagasaki and beyond - can tell us that the harm goes on. In contamination of bodies and environment, in our minds and politic

All my people who knew that day, or knew the days to come in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, have now passed. I begged them to them tell me what they felt and thought when they first learned of nuclear weapons..

80 years ago this morningโ€”at 5:29 AM (Mountain War Time)โ€”about 35 miles southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, the nuclear age began with a big bang. Contrary to widespread assumptions, the area surrounding the remote Trinity test site was not uninhabited, and the fallout did not drift away harmlessly.
